Gondoliers

Apparently all I post here are announcements of shows that I am in, but really that is the most interesting thing that I do... so, in case anyone doesn't already know about it, you should come see me in The Gondoliers. I play the role of Giulia, a contadina who thinks she is in love with Marco and Giuseppe, but is happy to settle down with her long-time suitor, Antonio, another of the jolly Venetian gondoliers. I have a tiny solo in the first number which you might catch if you don't blink.

Performances will take place on the following dates:
Friday, April 30, 8:00 PM
Saturday, May 1, 8:00 PM
Sunday, May 2, 2:00 PM
Thursday, May 6, 8:00 PM
Friday, May 7, 8:00 PM
Saturday, May 8, 2:00 PM

All performances will take place in La Sala de Puerto Rico (2nd floor MIT Student Center).

To sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock...

I'm heading into tech week for The Mikado, and thought I'd post to invite anyone who's interested before I am totally submerged in the show. So... if you enjoy the silliness that is Gilbert and Sullivan or pretty colored kimonos that I dyed by hand or singing and dancing or just watching me simper behind my fan, here are the relevant details:

Pirates of Penzance

As many of you already know... I'm making costumes for and singing in the chorus of The Pirates of Penzance at MIT this fall. If you have time (are are not already in the show) you should come see me! Details available at the MIT G&SP Website. We open next Friday and run for two weekends.

Pirates!

I am working on Pirates of Penzance this fall. Anyone have a favorite pirate movie that you'd like to share? I'm looking for some visual inspiration for costumes.

War and Peace

After something like three years, I finally finished reading War and Peace. Just wanted to document that somewhere. Tolstoy's take-home message seems to be that there is no free will and everything is inevitable, and maybe I should start over at the beginning to see how that applies to his characters, but I'm not going to. The book pretty much alternated between three sections: the character-driven story (what I called the "peace" part), the story of Napoleon's army approaching, invading, and being repulsed from Moscow (what I called the "war" part), and Tolstoy's non-story-based thoughts on life, the universe, and everything (what I called the "lecture" part). I actually really enjoyed the "peace" part of the novel and somewhat enjoyed the other parts, but it did take me an awfully long time to read....

Ruddigore

For those of you who don't already know, I am working on G&S's Ruddigore at MIT this spring. (I'm making costumes and painting wallpaper and singing in the chorus.) I thought I should post details before it entirely consumes me. Performances will take place on the following dates and times:

Friday, 5/2/2008, 8pm
Saturday, 5/3/2008, 8pm
Sunday, 5/4/2008, 2pm matinee
Thursday, 5/8/2008, 8pm
Friday, 5/9/2008, 8pm
Saturday, 5/10/2008, 2pm matinee

All performances will take place in La Sala de Puerto Rico, on the 2nd floor of the MIT Student Center. Tickets can be reserved at http://web.mit.edu/gsp

Will I Never Learn?

Once again I will be participating with the Professional Center for Child Development's team in this year's Polar Plunge. This is an event where people pledge money to benefit needy children in Massachusetts and I jump into the cold Atlantic waters. Last year the hardest part proved to be finding the beach, because it's in South Boston and I kept getting lost on you-can't-get-there-from-here roads. Hopefully this year I'll actually get there in better time. In any case, if you are interested in donating, you can go here and select "Sponsor a Plunger" at the top. Or if you'd just like to come and cheer me on or tell me what an idiot I am about to give myself hypothermia on purpose, you can come to the L Street Beach in South Boston this Sunday at 1, but don't ask me for directions!

Ben Kingsley, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Tori and I were checking out the free on-demand movies the other night and came across a movie listed as Sweeney Todd (1997) starring Ben Kingsley, and also Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis. We were intrigued and decided we would watch some of it, if only to figure out what exactly it was. As we suspected, it was approximately the same story as the Sondheim musical, but done as a non-musical. (Also, Comcast totally lied about Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis. Unless they were uncredited extras sporting English accents, they were no where to be found, but Ben Kingsley was, in fact, Sweeney.)

In any case, I thought the movie was overall terrible, but kind of amusing to watch mostly in fast forward, and I wanted to share my amusement.

New Year's Eve?

I'm trying to decide what to do for New Year's Eve. I am thinking of hosting a little soiree, but I don't really want to exert the effort of fountaining chocolate and all that if everyone I know already has other plans. Anyone interested?
