Miitomo was an application released for iOS and Android, and the first mobile application released by Nintendo. It is a spin-off of the Tomodachi Life series in the form of an unconventional social media service. Users primarily interacted with registered friends by answering pre-written questions about themselves, on which comments could be left for further discussion. Miis could also be dressed up in a more advanced way than that seen in Tomodachi Life, with items such as tops, bottoms, socks, and shoes now chosen individually. These clothes could be bought at the Miitomo Shop with coins, or won in Miitomo Drop, a pachinko-like game where Miis are dropped and bump into obstacles until landing on a prize. Additionally, the app featured the ability to create Miifotos, images in which Miis could be placed in various poses alongside text or other decorations.
Mii usage
Promotional Miis
The following are the three Miis that appeared in promotional material for Miitomo. Erica, a Mii that primarily appeared on the various app icons for Miitomo, served as the player's guide to the game. She would often promote upcoming updates and send occasional messages to the player. Tomoshiru Miide, a Mii based on a piece of Tomodachi Life promotional art, [citation needed] ran the game's accompanying Japanese social media account on Twitter. He would often promote new shop items in many humorous posts, which would often feature Erica. Tomoshiru Miide also posted his own QR code on the account, which could be used in both Miitomo and Tomodachi Life respectively. Ryusei, a Mii that exclusively appeared in artwork for the game, had also shared his own QR code, which could be found in a piece of artwork explaining the game's QR code functionality.

History
A Mii-focused mobile app was first mentioned by Satoru Iwata in a 2015 interview with The Nikkei, where he alluded to Miifotos as a way to make Mii profile icons for social media.[1]
Miitomo was shut down on May 9th, 2018.[2] It was removed from the App Store and Google Play Store following the shutdown.

Trivia
- From April 25th, 2017 until its closure, Miitomo clothes could be worn by the player's Mii in Super Mario Run.
- The personality descriptions come directly from Tomodachi Life, with a few changes such as changing "he/she" pronouns into singular "they".
- QR Codes for Miitomo and Tomodachi Life are cross-compatible, carrying over voices and personlities between both titles..
