RequestsError

Hi again,

I copied a DOI address from a web page. It was split over two lines which resulted in a space being placed in the middle:

https://doi.org/10.1371/%20journal.pgph.0000245

This resulted in Citer returning the message: "RequestsError". When I removed the '%20' from the string I got the right result. If it is true that a space is never appropriate in the middle of a DOI string, then stripping any such spaces before running the query might result in more satisfied and less confused users (or in the alternative, substitute the message, "You did not enter a valid DOI. Hi. Thanks for the suggestion. I had to refer to DOI handbook to see if space is a valid character or not. According to section 3.2.1 GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DOI SYNTAX: "The DOI name is case-insensitive and can incorporate any printable characters from the legal graphic characters of Unicode." Apparently, space is considered both a graphic character and printable character. That being said, I have not seen any DOI containing the space character.

Currently citer does not consider the space a valid DOI character, but https://doi.org/10.1371/%20journal.pgph.0000245 is still a valid URL and citer tries to connect to its server, but it fails with RequestsError because the server responds with 404 error code.

It is possible to add a separate input type for DOIs. That way citer would not confuse a DOI for a URL. However I believe a separate input type would be a little less convenient for users. For now I'm going to leave citer as it is but might reconsider if other users report similar issues. Dalba 08:33, 22 March 2024 (UTC)

Twin ISSN generated by Citer in cite journal

In quite a few cases, Citer generates a twin ISSN in the form issn=<ISSN1>, <ISSN2> in the {{Cite journal}}. The magazines now routinely declare twin ISSNs, one for Internet, one for print. Fixed AFAICT, JSTOR does not provide any info about which ISSN is the electronic one. I decided to ignore the second one and use the first as |issn=. Dalba 18:03, 2 May 2024 (UTC)

Ref names

Hi Dalba, thanks again for this amazing tool. I had a question about the ref names that are generated by the tool. I noticed that, until a week ago, the tool would include the author's last name and the publication date in the reference name, e.g.:

Recently, however, it appears the last name and publication date are not included in the reference name at all, so the references come out like this:

Is this an intentional change? I am not sure about other projects, but on English Wikipedia, Help:Footnotes says that the reference names "should have semantic value, so that they can be more easily distinguished from each other by human editors who are looking at the wikitext". Hi! You're right, I did change it (again!) after another user complained that the generated names can sometimes be too long.[1] I'm aware of the guideline, but in practice, how much do you rely on the semantic meaning of the reference name? Personally, I don't find the reference name that important; using the browser's "find in page" function or a page preview works fine for me. That being said, I'm happy to revert the change (again!!) if you think the older method was better. I'm undecided on this one. Dalba 15:27, 14 May 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for the response. I mainly rely on the author's last name (or the name of the publication, if there's no author). I could see why someone may think "Plants of the World Online" is too long, but for that particular case, spelling out the whole name may also be useful to people who wouldn't know what "POWO" stands for.

I personally am not too bothered if you leave the names as is, since I primarily use Citer in conjunction with VisualEditor, which allows editors to reuse references without actually knowing the ref name. However, for those who use the wikitext editor, the reference names might be more helpful to them. Epicgenius (talk) 23:49, 14 May 2024 (UTC)

Citer / vauthors

Citer's great, and it would be cool to have a vauthors option to generate author names in Vancouver style, since this is what (on en.wikipedia.org anyway) is usual for biomedical citations. Bon courage (talk) 07:14, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion! I believe the main (if not only) difference is that authors should be added to the vauthors= parameter. If that's the case, it shouldn't be too difficult to implement. Another error in generating cites

Hi Dalba. Today I ran an error in generating citations while using your tool. For example, when I try to auto-generate a cite like this or this, the tool waits about 15 seconds, then displays the output "RequestsError" in the "Shortened footnote and citation" box. As far as I know, this only started happening a few hours ago; the tool was working fine yesterday, and it previously didn't give me any issues with websites such as Deadline and NBC News. Timeout error

The link that I was trying it with (among others) was https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/B9780128145517000404 it may be an issue with sciencedirect. I tried the link (which worked?) and doi (which didn't work). Just to mess around a bit I tried the DOI from this link https://journals.lww.com/jasn/fulltext/1999/02000/lupus_nephritis.26.aspx and it also didn't work. Localization

Hello Dalba

Your tool “Citer” is excellent and several active users on the Danish Wikipedia (dawiki) use it. However, there are some language issues, so I would like to ask if you want to do more localization.

There are two aspects to this:

1. It would be good if the output in the form of template calls could use Danish templates and template parameters as well as Danish language dates.
2. It would also be good if the tool understood Danish dates on websites and Danish keywords in bylines etc. This would also benefit contributors on other Wikipedias that use Danish-language sources.

I understand the desire for improved language support. However, implementing full localization as you've described would unfortunately require a significant amount of development time and a substantial refactoring of the current codebase. This would involve establishing a system for coordinating and managing community-contributed translations and updates.

Incorrect dates for FDA

Citer is using the wrong dates for many pages from the FDA. It is using "1 October 2024". Here are some examples.

Hi, sorry for the late reply. Here's how Citer works: it tries to find a reliable date tag on a page. If that fails, it attempts to locate the first date on the page. The second approach is, of course, prone to errors, but it usually works well on most news websites and seems preferable to not providing a date at all. On the FDA site, there is an official date tag (<meta property="article:published_time" content="Wed, 01/22/2025 - 14:17" />), but it uses an ambiguous date format, so Citer ignores it. The DD/MM/YYYY format is ambiguous because it can be mistaken for MM/DD/YYYY. In this particular case, the ambiguity could be resolved because the month number cannot be greater than 12, so there's room for improvement. I just don't know when I get the time to do so. The issue with dl.acm.org appears to be mostly resolved. However, you may occasionally encounter timeout errors due to the server responding too slowly. Seems like Google had tweaked the Books yet again. The URL https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Temptation_of_Chocolate/A-8PGtx3uI4C?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=Neuhaus+ballotin&pg=PA21&printsec=frontcover does not work (KeyError or AttributeError depending on the level of argument trimming). The very short version https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Temptation_of_Chocolate/A-8PGtx3uI4C works sometimes, repeated invocations sometimes generate the result, sometimes yield an error. Incorrect dates on Australian articles ongoing

Hi again Dalba. I raised this some time ago, but it seems to be a persistent error with most sites published in the morning in Australia. Even though the article is dated with the correct date, citer seems to date it to the day before. As an example, try this article. Published 5am AEDT on 2 April, but citer returns 1 April. I usually remember to check and fix, and it doesn't stop me from working, so not that serious, but it would be nice if you could work out why, and fix it if possible. Hi, Laterthanyouthink! There is a meta tag on the page you linked which states that the article's publish date has been April 1st:

(On most browsers, you can view the source code by pressing Ctrl+U on the page.)

Citer not generating citation

Hi Dalba, thanks again for the citer tool. I'm currently encountering issues with the tool; when I try to paste a URL, I get a 502 error no matter what URL I insert (for example, https://www.nytimes.com/1967/01/06/archives/plumbers-returning-to-work-after-164day-strike.html). Links to the newspaper do not capitalise the word "the", but should.

Incidentally, it would be desirable for Wikipedia links to replace ‘curly single quotes’ in titles by 'straight apostrophes'.

Issue with InDaily

An issue with the websites related to InDaily (and I think all Solstice Media?)... it does not seem to pick up the authors, since they changed their website design. It also always seems to pick up the website as "website=InDaily, Inside South Australia", and it would be good to drop that second bit.

Btw the date issue seems to continue with all articles published in the Australian morning (have not tested for exact time), using the previous day's date. I know you have looked at this before, but is there not some way of correcting this, please? Laterthanyouthink (talk) 02:19, 19 January 2026 (UTC)

I’ve updated the configuration for Citer to drop 'Inside South Australia' from the website name. This change hasn't been deployed yet, but it should be live within the next 24 hours.

Regarding the other points:

• Author Metadata: Since the redesign, the site isn't properly tagging authors in the metadata. While I could technically write a custom scraper to find them, it’s a significant amount of effort for a single domain. For now, it’s likely a manual fix for the user.
• The Date Issue: This usually comes down to timezone discrepancies. Because many websites don't explicitly state their timezone in the code, the tool pulls the date as provided by the server. To 'correct' this automatically, I would need to collect user timezone data, which raises privacy concerns I'd rather avoid. In most cases, the provided date is technically accurate to the source’s publication window.

What's the problem with People.com?

Background: While browsing through a wikipedia page on Diane Ladd, I came across a broken citation. I try to repair broken citations when I can, and I use your citer tool most frequently in such situations. The broken citation linked to the gossip/news site People.com, so I fed the link to your tool. It returns an "HTTPError". I explored a little bit to see if the particular link was the problem. Probably not. Every URL from the People.com website seems to have the same problem. Here's one URL that I tried.

Citer generates the citation correctly when run from my local machine, but it appears that People.com has blocked the IP addresses for Toolforge.

Requests from the tool are returning an HTTP 402 error, which usually indicates that the site’s bot-protection (like a firewall) is triggering. I also tested this with Citoid, and it is encountering the same issue, which confirms that the website is actively blocking server-side requests from Wikimedia’s infrastructure.

In these situations, browser-based scripts that run on your local computer often work better since they use your own IP address. While I haven't tested these extensively myself, you might want to try these two scripts:

• https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bazzargh/citemark
• https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Ark25/RefScript

Another case of Toolforge's IP address being blocked. I've added Citoid as a fallback for OCLC failures; it should now generate a basic {{cite web}} template, which is hopefully better than nothing. Citer is hanging on particular dois

Over the last couple of days, Citer has stopped working on about half the dois I submit – it just hangs when I enter a valid doi and press the Submit button. The other half of dois work fine. But when Citer hangs on a particular doi, it consistently hangs if I submit the same doi at later times, suggesting the issue is something to do with the doi itself. Examples of dois it hangs on are: 10.1007/s11104-025-08017-x, 10.1007/978-3-031-28307-9_11, and 10.1007/978-3-030-95365-2_20. – Epipelagic (talk) 06:06, 16 February 2026 (UTC)

George P. Smith, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry

When creating a citation for George P. Smith George Smith (chemist), using the biography from the Nobel Prize organization website, the returned URL says the URL date coincides with the laureate's date of birth. Odd. I would have thought it would be no earlier than November 2018.

Good catch, Turtlens.

That happens when a page lacks a proper publication date. Citer desperately grabs any date it finds on the page — here, George Smith's birth date — rather than leaving the field empty. A wrong date is easy to delete or fix; a missing date is easy to forget.

New York Times doesn't include the 'website' parameter

Hi. I've noticed that when submitting a New York Times link, the website parameter is missing. This behavior is recent. As far as I can tell, the script works well in all other links.

citer not responding to ISBN

I've tried citer on several ISBNs recently, and citer just ignores them. E.g.

Remarkable Bright Creatures ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-0063204157

It's not that I'm looking to cite Remarkable Bright Creatures. I chose that as an ISBN where the tool should work. Turtlens (talk) 17:22, 19 July 2026 (UTC)
