kayjayuu: Archer looking satisfied (satisfied)

For anyone who hangs around Trek fandom any length of time, you know that we as Enterprise fans have... challenges. With other fans, with Paramount/CBS, with the legacy of being the (so far) "last Trek" series. It was a prequel, it had lyrics with the theme song, the Vulcans were a little different than before, the Temporal Cold War, blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda.

We all know the drill.

But being a fan of Enterprise also has a LOT of pluses: absolutely fantastic actors who appreciate their fans and interact with them, a fresh take on the Star Trek legacy, terrific story-telling in individual episodes and longer-term story arcs. And at least in my case, the wonderful friendships that have come from banding together in difficult circumstances, fighting for the show to return, and ultimately losing it.

Of course, then there are fans who came to the party later, either with no preconceptions (thanks, Mr. Velik!) or after reconsideration. They bring new ideas, lots of squee, and the realization for us "older" fen that nothing really ends, it just becomes new again, and again, and again.

So, with that in mind, here's the Obligatory (or not) Introductory Post for the Mess Hall. If you feel like it, stop by and answer a few questions about yourself and the show. We'll keep it simple and kind of free form )

[community profile] space_swap is a multimedia exchange for space fandoms of all sorts, including television series, movies, and books.

This post gives all the details of the exchange, including timelines for nominating randoms, & characters, signups, and schedules as well as the requirements for the fan works produced (i.e. 1000 words for vic, etc.)

The nomination period lasts through December. I'm going to nominate Enterprise, but can only nominate 4 characters, so if you might like to offer or request ENT stories, art, etc. be sure your characters of choice get nominated!

Ir would be great if several ENT authors were to sign up to give us all a good chance at getting to both write and receive new stories about our favorite characters!

[personal profile] kayjayuu pointed me in the direction of this wonderful film – Prelude to Axanar

It's twenty minutes of pure Trek goodness. Set between the timeframes of Enterprise and TOS, after the Romulan war, it is a prequel for a full length feature "Axanar" being funded by a kickstarter campaign (as was the prequel). To quote the creators, ""Axanar" is the story of Garth of Izar & the Battle of Axanar, a pivotal event in the history of the Federation."

The production values are great, and the cast includes some VERY familiar faces, one of whom continues in his Enterprise role. And there is a wonderful tribute to the Captain of the Enterprise in a placename. I'll admit to getting misty-eyed when Starfleet's senior Admiral makes a speech that invokes all of what Jonathan believed in about the Federation.

Just go watch! And definitely discuss it here all you like! (I tried not to include spoilers in my post here, but the comments don't need to be spoiler-free.)

I am so looking forward to the full length film.

The [community profile] fancake community is trying an occasional short-duration rec cycle for some themes - one week rounds called Cupcake Rounds. The first of these begins today and is an opportunity to rec creators of any type of fanworks - authors, artists, vid-makers, etc.

Any creator with at least two publicly available completed works is eligible. Works don't have to be new or recent as long as they can be accessed. To me, this sounds like a fun chance to go back to look at some old favorites!

12 years ago in September, Enterprise premiered, so with that and Netflix existing and the Blu-rays being released I figure what better time for a rewatch? So I'm having one.

It's going to be a bit of a slow thing, one episode a week, because of life & jobs and such. I'm starting this week with Broken Bow and if you'd like to play along, watch the show sometime this week, then put on a fresh pair of panties and post about it on Friday. I'll make a post here, and everyone who wants to can link their commentary. Cool?

I posted about this last year, and thought I'd remind people about it for this round.

The [community profile] wicked_awards, No Rest For The Wicked, a twice-a-year multi-fandom awards community for fanfiction and fanart, is open for Round 10 nominations during the month of August.

All incarnations of Star Trek are included on the fandom list, and there are quite a few categories for which you can nominate stories, vids, and art/icons. The complete category list is here and includes gen, slash, het, angst, darkfic, long-fic, drabbles (fic up to 600 words), romance/fluff, and more. Stories can be nominated in more than one category as applicable. Art (icons, wallpapers, banners, etc.) and fanvids are also eligible.

The winners are determined by a panel of judges (who will have no nominations themselves), not by voting. It's a good opportunity to recommend some Enterprise stories/vids/art to an audience that might not be very familiar with the ENT works that are out there. Works do not need to be new - as long as there is a link available, it makes no difference when it was created.

I've participated in the nominations twice now, and am glad to try to answer any questions or point you to someone who would know.

The 2013 Not Prime Time Collection is open on AO3, complete with author reveals. It includes 4 new Enterprise stories! They are (alphabetically)

Close Encounters of the Family Kind by joyce (Archer/Reed) [G] – for kayjayuu

Home by kayjayuu (Archer/Reed) [T] – for mareel

Ships in the Night by mareel (Archer/Reed) [M] – for smirnoffmule

Tuluk tu Vokau by moirariordan (Tucker/T'Pol) [T] – for HopefulNebula

I was so excited to see such a great representation for ENT in the exchange this year. And looking forward to more next year!

UPDATE: Sign-ups for the NPT exchange have begun and are open until April 25. Information about the process and a link to the AO3 sign-up form are here.

The [community profile] not_primetime fic exchange for medium-sized fandoms is in the fandom & character nomination stage - the post is here. This is the time to nominate any characters you would like to request or offer to write. Enterprise is eligible, as are all of the other Trek series and movies. You can see what has already been nominated here on AO3. The tag set doesn't update immediately, so keep checking back.

The general FAQ for [community profile] not_primetime is here.

Several Enterprise writers participated last year, though not all were matched for writing ENT stories. I'd love to see more writers participate this year, with both requests and offers to write for the fandom - it can only help our chances to both write and receive an Enterprise fic.

The theme for this month's round of story recommendations at [community profile] fancake is "Canon Alternate Realities". This theme encompasses fanworks based on alternate universes created within the canon of the source work itself, such as the Mirrorverses in Star Trek.

This is an opportunity to rec your favorite Enterprise fic or art or vids set in the Mirror Universe, or the Twilight or E2 alternate universes. I've been requesting more canon-related themes for that community so it was nice to see one this month.

The link to the theme post information is here. The guidelines are as usual: no WIP's or self-recs, but pretty much anything else is good - any length, pairing, etc.

This month's theme for story recommendations at [community profile] fancake is "First Time".

There are still very few ENT recs at all in this community, but this is a good theme - a good chance to let people know ENT fic is out there for a variety of pairings.

The link to the theme post information is here. The guidelines are simple - no WIP's or self-recs. Aside from that, go for it!

This month's theme for story recommendations at [community profile] fancake is "Minor Characters".

They define 'minor' rather loosely, and ultimately leave it up to those doing the recs to decide about this. I don't think it's intended that all characters in the episode credits would be considered 'major' for this purpose, since they gave an example from HP fandom where only 3 characters would be considered major.

This community has had very few ENT recs at all, perhaps since many of the themes chosen just don't apply very well to ENT fic. But this might be an opportunity to share a favorite story featuring Phlox, or Porthos, or Travis or...

The link to the theme post information is here.

I just found this community, and wanted let other ENT fic writers (and readers!) know about it. I think I'm going to give it a try, since drabble-length stories are acceptable.

The [community profile] fancake community selects a monthly theme for fic recommendations. This month's theme is Time Travel - in any possible sense of the phrase. AU's (canon or otherwise), temporal anomalies, any kind of time-related story is appropriate.

It's a multi-fandom community, and some of the past themes there haven't been very suited to Enterprise stories, but this one seems like it might be an opportunity to share your favorites. Their guidelines are pretty simple, though I think you need to join the comm to participate other than as a reader. But don't wait to just read! There hasn't been much ENT there at all, so it's up to us to change that.
