Kalo was a 23rd century Iotian who made a name for himself as a gangster on the planet Sigma Iotia II, employed by Bela Okmyx of the Northside Territory in the 2260s decade.
Biography
In the year 2268, Kalo and Mirt were sent by Okmyx to retrieve James T. Kirk, Spock, and Leonard McCoy when they first beamed down to Iotia. Kalo defended them against a "hit" by Jojo Krako's men, and brought them to Okmyx, reporting that Mirt had been killed. Okmyx ordered Kalo to "hit" them back. Later, Kalo and other guards played poker while watching over the locked-up Starfleet officers. Kirk convinced Kalo to try playing fizzbin, a game with such complex rules that Kirk was able to distract and overpower them. (TOS episode & Star Trek 4 novelization: A Piece of the Action)
At one point, Kalo and another hood guarded Leonard McCoy and Spock for Okmyx. James T. Kirk arrived armed with a Tommy gun and made a point of complimenting the other's expensive, blue pin-striped suit. He forced both gangsters at gunpoint to give up their clothes to help the officers blend in during their escape. Spock wore Kalo's suit. Kalo was present, wearing long underwear, during a meeting of planet Bosses that united Iotian government into a syndicate under Okmyx. (TOS episode: "A Piece of the Action")

Afterward, Slugo was relentlessly teased about fizzbin and being stripped down. He couldn't get a decent job or even play a game of cards without enduring ridicule. (TOS - Strange New Worlds V short story: "Legal Action")
He found some success, however. In the early 2280s, during Okmyx's third term as President, Kalo served as his Vice President. He also had a race track named in his honor. Still, in 2282, Okmyx asked Kirk to transmit complete rules for fizzbin, as Kalo was hoping to sell it as a game. (TOS - Strange New Worlds VI short story: "A Piece of the Pie")
By the late 2280s he'd heard enough jokes. In 2288, he tried "making a hit" on Kirk when the Rear Admiral visited Iotia to testify in the Planetary Court of Iotia. (TOS - Strange New Worlds V short story: "Legal Action")
