Jojo Krako was one of the Iotian gangland bosses of Sigma Iotia II. (TOS episode & Star Trek 4 novelization: A Piece of the Action)
Biography
Krako was born between 2218 and 2220. He had a full-on personality with a strong ego, and was never afraid of a fight. He was an authority in the fields of negotiation and diplomacy. He was particularly skilled in forgery and gambling, especially poker. He was professionally skilled in administration and unarmed combat. However, he was only semiskilled with a pistol. He led the Krako gang. (FASA RPG module: Another Piece of the Action)
He was from Iotia's southern continent of Landek. (Decipher RPG module: Worlds)
By 2268, as the leading representative of the Southside Territory, Boss Krako was the second most powerful leader on Iotia during the world's infatuation with mobster culture. During negotiations to unify Iotia's governments, James T. Kirk proposed that Krako become Bela Okmyx's lieutenant. (TOS episode & Star Trek 4 novelization: A Piece of the Action)
In the aftermath of Kirk's visit to the planet in 2268, Iotia considered adopting a different form of government. Krako and the people he represented desired communism, but representative democracy was chosen during a general election. (TOS - Strange New Worlds 6 short story: "A Piece of the Pie", TOS - Year Five - Odyssey's End comic: "Issue 3")
Krako was married. When the USS Enterprise returned a year later to "collect their cut" of planetary profits, he and his wife had dinner with Kirk and Angela Oxmyx. (TOS reference: Official Cooking Manual)
When Leonard McCoy's communicator was stolen from Okmyx's residence, Krako had heard that Bonehead Malone ended up owning it, and set up a meeting between him and Kirk. (TOS video game: 25th Anniversary (NES))
Political career
By 2269, Krako had become Vice President under President Bela Okmyx. (TOS - Fotonovel novelization: A Piece of the Action)
Krako lost three presidential elections against Okmyx, coming close the first time, but losing by a landslide afterward. (TOS - Strange New Worlds VI short story: "A Piece of the Pie")
Iotians eventually adopted six-week presidential terms. Following his encounter with Kirk, Krako became disenfranchised with the united government's unequal treatment of his people and their concerns, and joined the Astro-Liberation Party. Eventually he led a raid that kidnapped Spock from a presidential tour bus, explaining his reasons after arriving at their headquarters. Spock agreed that Krako's concerns were valid. When Krako lamented that no Southern Continent candidate could win more than one percent of the vote, Spock proposed running as their candidate. (TOS - Year Five - Odyssey's End comic: "Issue 3")
Krako supported Spock's election campaign, whose platform was based on Krako's grievances. When the Delta Base space station began to deorbit, threatening millions of lives, and the Iotian government was unable to act, Krako joined Kirk to lead a raid on Omega Base and launch a rescue rocket. Spock won the presidency, and Krako stood by as Spock resigned, as Starfleet officers were prohibited from holding public office. However, Spock nominated Krako to a seat in a proposed triumvirate council intended to provide more balanced representation in their government. (TOS - Year Five - Odyssey's End comic: "Issue 4")
In 2271, when he was 52 years old, Krako served in the role of Deputy Planetary Administrator. He still didn't completely trust Okmyx, but never found a way to unseat him. (FASA RPG module: Another Piece of the Action)
By the 2280s, Okmyx had passed planetary authority over to Krako. (TOS - Strange New Worlds V short story: "Legal Action")
Alternate realities
In an alternate timeline beset by the temporal anomaly crisis, Krako was pulled into the late 24th century. He was skilled in the fields of command, engineering, and security. Among the equipment he brought to bear in missions were his suit, a 20th century pistol, coffee, casino chips, a watch, and a grenade. (ST video game: Timelines)
