Checkers

Checkers is an ancient Earth board game.

History and specifics

Playing checkers required a routine level of gaming skill, as opposed to more complex games such as poker or chess. (Last Unicorn RPG modules: Star Trek: The Next Generation Core Game Book, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Core Game Book)

In the 2250s, James T. Kirk earned a checkers record during an unofficial competition at Starfleet Academy that he still held in 2268. (TOS novel: The Starship Trap)

While being held captive with Professor Kovari Kostas in a storeroom on Rimillia, Kirk improvised a game of checkers using crackers for playing pieces. (TOS novel: Twilight's End)

While in nonspace in 2270, Montgomery Scott used magic to send a tennis ball ricocheting off the walls at hundreds of kilometers per hour, eventually disintegrating it after it dented the recreation room walls. He thought he ought to practice with less dangerous objects instead, and had the game dispenser provide him with a checkers set. (TAS - Log Three novelization: The Magicks of Megas-Tu)

In 2273, the upper area of the recreation deck aboard the refit USS Enterprise contained small rooms for playing non-electronic games such as backgammon, cards, three-dimensional chess, and checkers. (TOS reference: Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise)

In the 2280s, Commander Aretha iXJohns played checkers with moderate proficiency. (FASA RPG module: Star Fleet Intelligence Manual)

In 2368, when the USS Enterprise-D crew suffered from amnesia, Kristin took care of Spot and young Alexander Rozhenko. She spotted a checkers board in Ten Forward and asked him to play. Hours later, she replicated them a second checkers game in her quarters. He seemed to prefer rolling the red and black disks along the floor for Spot to play with. (TNG - Strange New Worlds V short story: "Kristin's Conundrum")

In 2375, Marla Gilmore told Chakotay she used a synaptic stimulator to view alien vistas to pass the time after the USS Equinox was badly damaged during its transition into the Delta Quadrant. She said it was more entertaining than checkers. (VOY episode & novelization: Equinox)
