Thoughts on the wattpad Ao3 situation?

teaboot answered:

[Re: facing new censorship restrictions on Wattpad, Wattpad users are fleeing to AO3, where a portion of them appear to be trying to impose censorship restrictions]

As an abuse survivor whose primary connection to the world was the internet, I first learned that what I was experiencing was abuse by finding a fic I was reading had that tagged.

Then, experiencing a morbid mix of fascination and denial and desperation to contextualize my expriences, I then went through about a hundred different pics with that tag until I could say out loud to myself, “These behaviours are abusive. This is abuse. Thousands of other people have agreed it is not normal.

Once I had it in me to suspect, and once I had the language I needed to pinpoint what was wrong, I was able to branch out. Differentiate between emotional abuse and teasing, psychological abuse and nomal behaviour. How my behaviour emulated these things, and why it was unhealthy, and what I should correct in myself to avoid becoming like the people who hurt me.

I wasn’t being sexually abused, but if I had been, I imagine this discovery process would have been exactly the same. Accidental, then purposeful, then comparing, researching, validating, and seeking help.

As an individual, there’s a lot of shit that icks me the fuck out, that I would find incredibly unpleasant and distressing to read. So I don’t read it. And, would you look at that, there’s a handy-dandy way for me to see up front which stories or poems or whatever include those things, and I don’t have to get blindsided.

People are going to write about whatever they want to write about whether you let them use a website to do it or not, and trying to stop them won’t stop them, it’ll just be harder to find. And for some of us, that messed up, awful, uncomfortable shit was very important to find.

There’s a lot more I can say about censorship. About the implications of coddling the public, stigmatizing real-world experiences, the foot in the door that allows us to spread from one little nasty thing we all agree is bad to everything else from gay sex to cross dressing to boys wearing pink, the obscene to the innocuous.

But.

If I may lower myself to entertain the argument that “Oh, but if you write about these awful things, you must have the heart of an abuser! You must have the heart of a murderer! You must have the heart of a rapist!”

Then I will ask the person who believes this to consider:

Would you rather have a monster who you can’t see, or hear, or sense, who is always there, always thinking its monstrous thoughts, making its monstrous plans, out of sight and hidden away until you happen to stumble across it unexpected in the dark?

Or would you rather it stay outside, in a clearly marked enclosure reading “MONSTER! DO NOT ENTER! MONSTER INSIDE!” where you can see it and avoid it, knowing exactly where it is?

Just, you know. My fucked up freak opinion

abuse also someone making you feel a little weird or unpleasant is NOT abuse sometimes we are not about you

thinking about what is and what isn't allowed in frame with reference ecosystems in prairie restoration

ariel-s-awesome

Explanation from OP in the replies

restoration ecology tends to want to restore to a past state of an ecosystem, but magically that past state never involved people! Harvest, reciprocity, etc are all ignored because we pretend there's such a thing as prairie without people. Turns out, that imagined prairie never existed, there were always people here and there should people involved in restored prairie too!

If you went to a bar and the bartender was a mousegirl you could ask for a drink and she would balance it on her head and say "for you, it's on the mouse"

megapope-deactivated20220531

the crazy thing about this is that it took one single word to turn it horny. coulda been a normal cute post. coulda taken the high road & conjured a delightful image of a mouse scampering down the bar with a beer ten times its size balanced on its head. but you had to say "mousegirl" and not "mouse." don't pretend this isn't what's going on either i know the score i know what's up. i'm familiar with this sort of semantic trick. you want to fuck down on an anime girl with certain characteristics of a rodent and everyone's gotta know.

If you live in the USA and you're pleading for donations to pay your rent, bills, or get food then dial 211! Please dial 211 before the last minute!

It's a toll free service with people who will help you find programs in your community to pay those bills, find food, and find housing! They will give you numbers to call so you can get help.

It is not 100% foolproof. Their job is to direct you to a program they believe will help your current issue, but it's still a step up from praying random strangers online will give you enough cash before a deadline! The added benefit of these community programs, which get funded by the local government most of the time, is if there are more people using them then they can get more money to help more people.

You're not taking resources from other people if you use your community services. Your taxes pay for them. Use them.

Dial 211 first to see if they can help, and if for some reason they can't, then make your donation posts!

Hi I work for my state's 211 service. It really breaks my heart how many people only know to call us at the last minute. 211's can provide a whole wealth of resources to use before things ever get to a cut off utility, eviction, or homelessness!

I can't speak for all 211's but most should also have a website detailing all the agencies in their database. if you don't like phone calls, this can be something to reference instead.

If you don't have health insurance but you need to see a doctor, reference 211! We list clinics that provide free or discounted general care, vision, and dental services to low income households and people without insurance! Many hospitals also have financial aid policies that can severely reduce your bill if you had an expensive procedure!

If you're stuck in a dead end job or need educational resources reference 211! There are a lot of programs focused on providing basic adult education as well as trade skills or other high demand fields! State governments are generally more interested in funneling people into work than providing benefits, but you can still use this to your advantage especially if you have some form of disability but are still able to work. That includes if you're neurodiverse or have mental health issues! Most of these programs are extremely underutilized.

If you believe you qualify for public benefits but the bureaucracy of the process is in your way, reference 211! There are agencies specifically geared towards helping people obtain the benefits they qualify for- for free!

If you need help with your taxes-

If you need help finding a pro bono lawyer-

If you need help finding affordable housing/section 8 housing-

If you need help finding food pantries-

If you need help paying for your prescriptions-

If you need help obtaining disability aids or assistive technology-

If you need help finding transportation options-

If you need help following a natural or personal disaster (like a home fire)-

If you need help repairing a home you or your family owns or it needs modifications to be accessible-

If you need Queer resources-

Reference your 211!!!!!

I had no idea what 211 was before working for it but I wish I had. I've learned so much about what resources are actually available to the community even in a ho hum area of the country like my state. I've saved my partner literally thousands of dollars just from the medical resources I've gathered.

Not enough young people know about or utilize these services but they are there for you!

P. S.

This isn't an intended use of 211, but I like to reference the agency listings when I look for jobs. Many of the agencies listed are non-profits which, while they certainly are not perfect, generally have lower barriers of entry to decent paying jobs with benefits. The work environments tend to be much kinder and at least pretend to be forward thinking. You're more likely to find jobs without as many people applying as well, especially if they're only advertising their positions through their own website.

I just watched somebody watch Doctor Horrible on youtube (do not judge my cringe viewing choices) and I'm crying, this guy cannot understand the ending. He calls it "bizarre" and "doesn't get it". He kept talking about how Doctor Horrible should resurrect Penny with mad science and become a hero and watched the credits expecting a bonus scene with a true ending in it because he could not comprehend the extremely fitting and well-placed stock-standard tragic ending. Man does not comprehend the idea of a tragedy. You can dislike Dr Horrible's ending (if you have no taste) but how do you not understand it? It is. Such a comprehensible story. It is not subtle or twist heavy. There are zero points of confusion.

Dude had decided so hard that he was watching Megamind that deviations from the plot of Megamind simply did not compute.

#he has fallen for the propaganda that the 'good guy' always gets the girl in the end#and cannot comprehend the fact that Billy could have HAD the girl he wanted if he just stopped deciding he needed to be something he wasn't#he destroyed her with his actions in an attempt to impress her but it was never really about her#he never saw her as a person only a prize to be 'earned' and that's why he lost her#it's been years since I watched it but I'm pretty sure she liked Billy just fine and only went to Captain Hammer when Billy rejected her#or at least was clueless that she was interested/flirting#but yeah people that claim Penny was unfairly fridged Do Not Get It the whole POINT is that Billy destroyed his own happiness

No, Billy never rejected her and she met and started dating Captain Hammer mere minutes after meeting Billy. But Billy, now that he was finally talking to her as a person instead of creepily watching her from across the laundromat, quickly developed a friendly rapport with Penny that had the potential for friendship or romance, while her relationship with Captain Hammer quickly soured because he's a self-obsessed manchild. She was very clearly fed up with Hammer by the time of the homeless shelter opening and probably would've dumped him very soon after. Had Billy just let things run their course, he would've come out of the situation with a good friend and/or girlfriend, depending on how romantically compatible they turned out to be.

What Billy did instead was to stop hanging out with her or with any of his other friends, because he was too busy working on his death Ray to get revenge on Captain Hammer. Both Captain Hammer and Billy were treating Penny as a prize in their slap fight and Billy could've come down to Earth but he didn't. He chose his pride over human connection. He decided that he could get his revenge on the guy who had "stolen" "his girl" and become a notable supervillain in one swoop, and devoted his efforts to that instead.

And he succeeded. And all it cost him was a single Penny.

bat-in-the-machine

There's also the fact that the epilogue makes Penny's death about everyone except Penny herself ("World Mourns Whats-Her-Name"), so it's not just Billy falling prey to his own flaws, but a whole systemic thing. There was no way for that story to end any way other than it did because of the people and setting.

#dr horrible's sing along blog#dr horrible discussion/analysis in the year 2025?? I'm thriving

I don't think it counts as analysis to just summarise the plot. Dr Horrible is a fun story with fantastic music that still holds up surprisingly well today despite the shifts in nerd culture (except for one rather unfortunate use of an ableist slur that certainly wouldn't have made it to screen if it were written today) but it's a little difficult to really analyse unless you're putting together a lesson for a Filmmaking 101 course or something, there's not a whole lot to really dig into that isn't just right there on the screen. It is not a story that contains multitudes. Very single tude story.

It’s also 42 minutes, and on YouTube. Here it is:

Regular reminder that you don't have the right to someone else's medical information.

You don't have the right to ask them what's wrong with them, what happened, why they need an accommodation, and so on.

You may be curious but it doesn't mean you're entitled to the information.

Stop asking. Stop pressuring. Respect people's boundaries. Respect our autonomy.

No means no.

consent respect it doesn't have to be a big thing you ask a question they say no you carry on or you use some basic social skills and realize it's a rude question and don't ask and carry on
