More Laundry

Ok, having read Laundry book 4 to start, I have now read book 1 then book 3 in that order.

I like them a lot, evn though I haven't read any books by the authors they are  using.

I also like the epilogue in The Atrocity Archives where he says really Len Deighton wrote horror, and Lovecraft wrote Espionage. Not sure I am convinced by the latter, but..definately interesting and makes you think on the topic.

On the whole, this last month or so has been a wonderful re-awakening.
For the first time in almost a decade I am reading new books and finding ones I love, instead of being too scared to try anything new, and half the time unable to read books I know I love cos they will be too much for my emotional equilibrium.

It's beautiful.

I have also been going to the St Andrews Botanic Gardens 2-4 times a week. It is also beautiful. When you sit there, you can't see any sign of a town around you, and I can sit there, watching the wind in trees, listening to the birds and the small waterfalls between ponds...and my mind just rests, not ripping itself to shreds. Normally I have to read whilst watching tv and also sew or rp to drive my mind from doing that.

I've just finished a lovely dinner of cold roast lamb, with boiled potatoes, carrot, mange tout, green beans, onion and baby sweetcorn. With  a shake of light soy sauce over the veg.

It seems difficult to remember that this time last year I would have had a bowl of broth (ham stock cube, half an onion, sliced) and thought that was enough for a main meal. In fact for the /only/ meal for the day. And I was too weak to climb the stairs without collapsing on my bed for at least 10 minutes afterwards......and still thought there was nothing really wrong.

Of course, there is a downside to having fallen in love with food again. It's having fallen in love with food again. The flavours are just so wonderful that my portion control has gone for a burton. On the upside, most of the large plates of food is now vegetables. potatoes I used to suffer as neccessary, and would normally take as chips or roasted. Carrot ? In soup of mince/stews only and very small chopped so I'd never taste it, only the effect on the rest of the dish. Peas and onions, yes, but mangetout and baby sweetcorn only in stir fries and green beans not at all.

But now I love them all. The taste of potatoes  is gorgeous. I don't even have any butter with them cos it disguises their flavour. And big hunks of carrots

I've also been baking a little again. Small cheese and oatmeal scones - great with cold ham and a touch of mustard. Carrot cake, which I would swear had ginger in it, even after hand-grating the cinnamon myself :) Again, a problem. It is so easy to make and delicious...baking whilst living alone is bad for the diet!

And home-made coleslaw. Wow is all I can say. Tastes much better than even good bought.

Internetz

My connection to the Net seems to have become a bit unstable the past couple of days. Yesterday, it went off about lunchtime. Well..kinda off. I could use SimpleMU to log into a MUSH, but rarely for long enough to do anything, and I couldn't connect tp any webpages. I went away for a few hours and it was working when I came back.

Today it went off again at half four, and back on again at coming up to 2100. This time I phoned my ISP about it. I had already both times tried the obvious - switch off for 10 or so, switch back on again, check connection wires ect to no avail. All the correct lights were on on the router as well.

I've no idea why this is happening...anynoe got any ideas ?

(Oh yes, the ISP helpline said they were referring me to someone who knew more tech stuff but they were busy so they would phone me back. Waiting to see if they do. If they do, I'm gopnna ask if they can think of a reason for it)

Graze-ing

As part of my healthier eating bid, I came across Graze. www.graze.com that is.

With a current offer of get first box free, 2nd half-price and cancel anytime I thought I'd give them a go. Got my first box on Wednesday, and it's pretty good. They show you a list of the nibbles they send <nuts/seeds/fruit> and you can tell them which ones you never want, which you would try, those you like and those you absolutely love..then they send you 4 portions in each box. Normal price £3.99 a box.

In my box I got 'Fiery Seeds' (sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, soya beans, sea salt, koji, crushed chilli), 'Black Forest' (dried strawberries, walnuts, and jumbo raisins), 'New England' (Dried cranberries and apple rings) and 'Americas nut mix' (brazil nuts, pecans and almonds).

I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would. The fiery seeds are indeed fiery, but taste nice. The New England was gorgeous. Hell, I've even eaten and enjoyed the jumbo raisins, and I normally hate them :)

I'm going to continue getting one box a week They are quite filling, and after almost three days I've finished the two with fruit, have half the seeds, and am yet to open the nuts, so 1 box a week seems good.

Anyhow, the point of this ramble is I have 2 vouchers to give out. Each when my code is quoted will get a free box from them (and I think the 2nd half price, but not sure), and more importantly give me a £1 credit to my account with them :>

Anyone interested ?
