a residence for patients (e.g., mental patients, drug addicts, alcoholics) who do not require hospitalization but who need an intermediate degree of care until they can return to the community.

Psychiatry A specialized sheltered environment for persons undergoing rehabilitation for mental illness or addiction disorders, including drug and alcohol abuse, who do not require in-patient hospitalization, but need an intermediate degree of care before returning to independent community living; HHs are often staffed by their own 'graduates' or professionals who provide guidance and if necessary, treatment.
