I know for a fact that I haven’t seen Ice Princess in a minimum of twenty years, because my memory of it is this: watching with my aunt at my uncle’s house where she was living during her last year of life after a colon cancer diagnosis, in the hospital bed they rented to have at home in a basement-turned-pseudo apartment. For years I thought Casey was played by Anne Hathaway, not Michelle Trachtenberg and I used to pull the sleeves of my shirts between my fingers to mimic the sleeves on Casey’s costume.

I’m feeling particularly nostalgic about it all, but I was so young so it’s a blur and it feels like I’m watching this movie for the very first time. Twenty years on and we’ve lost both Michelle Trachtenberg and now Hayden Panettiere; neither were super, super strong influences in my life, at least none that I can remember, but there’s still a bitter-sweetness around it all.
