Hi Everyone. I thought this would be the best group to post this in because everyone here seems to love mallet percussion. My website www.beinerbags.com makes an amazing mallet bag that is extremely durable and holds an incredible amount of mallets for a great price. We are having a special right now on all bags and cases and I think you guys should check it out. Thanks a lot and hope all is well in the mallet playing world!
At my school, there is a particulary incredible classical guitarist that has shown interest in playing a few duets with me on marimba next year. We were just wondering if anyone would suggest any pieces in particular? We're both pretty experienced players and would love to find a couple of great performance duets for recitals during the year...
Woo... I auditioned for the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (to go into year 11 next year). I actually got in - despite a very competitive audition process...so next year I'm able to study orchestral percussion much more intensively at a very high calibre music school. Just felt like bragging. Woo.
I play xylophone in my school's marching band, and we had percussion sectional today. Everyone else was working on the cadence, and then my director was like, "There's no actual written out mallet part for the cadence, but you can make one up." I'm not sure if she meant just for that rehearsal to keep me occupied or for the whole season in general...but regardless the concept of mallet playing in a cadence seemed strange to me.
So I was wondering if there are any schools that use mallet parts in their cadence? Or any percussion works in general that could give me the slightest idea as to what to play?
How do you warm up before practicing mallet? Usually I just do slow rolls and then gradually increase speed for two mallet work, and I do ripples for four mallet work...is this a good idea?
Also, should you stretch? I'd imagine so...but are there different stretches for different muscles used when playing mallet, especially four mallet literature? Should you do different stretches and warm-ups for two and four mallet work?
Any suggestions or information are greatly appreciated!
Out pit just lost our pit tech for two years? I dunno, but she was awesome... and I have never been in a pit where we basicall run ourselves... it sounds really annoying, but I know some of you are in that situation or have been in that situation. How do you survive a whole season???? I am pit section leader again this season, but being un named pit tech is hard! I know how to teach the kids and etc. But my problem is I'm having trouble concentrating on my own playing or motivating myself to do something other then talk to the other kids or just slack off... AHHHH!
Well...just thought I'd say hi! My name's Clarissa, I'm from Indiana...etc. I'll be a sophmore in high school next year. I started playing percussion in 6th grade, but then took a year off for my freshman year. Basically I was really uneducated about percussion and thought that if I joined band, I'd have to march drums (boo drums). So, now that I've got my head on straight and have learned of the great and almighty pit, I'm loving my first year of band. My marimba's name is Seraphina (um...not sure if you want to know, lol).
Well...I think that's it! Any questions about me, just ask. I'm not sure how much of a help I'd be on your musical questions :D. Though I do enjoy mallets, I'm not very good at them. :(
I'm a college sophomore who will maybe major in music, and I was just wondering if anyone here is in New York State, and if so, if they're planning on going to either of the PASIC conventions in Syracuse or Binghamton. I'm considering going to the one in Binghamton, but probably won't, since April is crazy busy for me, and I'm also lazy.
