Date: 2025-08-24 11:49 pm (UTC)AND THAT'S IT!!! Kala's agency and how she felt about it was a big theme in the Christmas special/S0201. It was for a reason! also, the writers layered it thick when they made it about Kala needing both to be in balance. I think people just hate polyamory sometimes

Date: 2025-08-25 12:11 am (UTC)The reaction to Rajan as a character in general seemed really harsh to me. Kala wasn’t in love with him at first but it’s not like he was a villain. The worst thing he did was that shit with the expired drugs and yeah that’s really terrible but it’s not unrealistic for a billionaire pharmaceutical ceo who basically thought of work as his religion, and he absolutely changed course when she showed him the error of his ways. He just loved her more than she loved him and wasn’t always the most observant of things.

Date: 2025-08-25 12:39 am (UTC)Yeah, people act like it's possible for someone to be a millionaire and not do fucked up shit like. hello?? are y'all listening to yourselves? also Rajan literally told Kala "my company... it's just belongings. You are my life" Like he literally loved her more than he loved his father's legacy, jesus christ, what else do you need to believe in Rajan?
I think a big part of this is also just plain old racism (to which the series contributed a bit in S1 with the whole framing of Kala and Rajan's relationship as something she "had" to do but that the series tried to fix during S2).
>> He just loved her more than she loved him
THIS!!! people don't understand sometimes that some relationships really have love "imbalances" and that doesn't mean they're evil. If anything, it means one of them is too full of love and needs someone else to share that love with.

Date: 2025-08-25 01:11 am (UTC)Yeah there was definitely that.
Kala was also getting in her own way a lot of the time. I relate most to her character, overthinking things and being more logic than emotions etc but she’s still frustrating. He gave her so many outs that she just didn’t take, so how was he supposed to know she didn’t love him back? It’s like she was expecting love to feel a certain way and with Rajan it didn’t, at least at first. With Wolfgang they could feel each other which I think for both of them is why it was so much easier to get there, and once she was able to love him she was able to figure out how she really felt about Rajan.

Date: 2025-08-25 03:29 pm (UTC)Oh man you touched on something that literally keeps me awake at night sometimes. Like why did people expect Rajan to read Kala's mind? He was not a sensate, he was a common sapien and, afaik, sapiens don't read minds. Just because Kala and Wolfgang were almost mind melded, it doesn't mean that everyone else in Kala's life had access to her thoughts 24/7. Also, if people wanted soooo badly that Kala stayed with a sensate, why wasn't the rest of the cluster an option. I always think of Yrsa's "loving someone of your cluster is pathological" because that's the thing isn't it? Who's to say you truly love that other person or you're just obsessed with yourself? It's a crazy thing to think about because that means that Kala growing to love Rajan is probably more pure and wholesome than Kala fallingg in love for someone who's essentially another of herself (Jonas' words verbatim: you are no longer just you. You have seven other selves).
Sense8 poses an interesting question on where one ends and the other begins when you're literally sharing a mind.

Date: 2025-08-25 04:46 pm (UTC)Yes lol that's exactly what they expected. And I think Kala expected it too lol. I love her so much but girl get it together. She even knew for a fact how Wolfgang felt about her and needed him to say it first.
I think Yrsa was a bitter woman who experienced something really traumatic with her own cluster that we never got to explore in the series. If you look at the three canon couples: Kala and Wolfgang, Will and Riley, and Jonas with Angelica, none of them were particularly self-obsessed. For Wolfgang and Riley, I think having that love helped them love themselves. Will obviously has his savior complex and Riley needed so much saving in season one, but for Kala I think she was just so in her head all the time that she had a hard time just experiencing life and emotions etc whereas Wolfgang is all about hedonism and living in the moment.

Date: 2025-08-27 02:11 pm (UTC)Yeah that is really interesting. I wonder what Milton's cluster was like. We only got glimpses of Jonas and Angelica's cluster but we did see that Harry (I think his name was) kinda wimped out in the end and messed up their overall plan to destroy BPO and got shot by their other one. And then there's Todd of course. There must've been more like Todd.
That's a good point about Lila. I imagine they were put in a position (possibly tortured) where they were converted to collaborators instead of being lobotomized outright, but that seemed to be Whispers' MO. He would've done it to Nomi and Will if he had the chance, before they pissed him off enough that he made it personal. Those who cooperated were left alone to bring him more bodies, and those that didn't were put in the zombie farm.
The August 8 cluster really had it all. I mean, imagine being a sensate and hearing about what they accomplished in like a year, without even having their mother to guide them. All the stars aligned to have their different skills and personalities. If even one of them had fallen, they wouldn't have survived. The absolute SHOCK on Milton's face when Will outsmarted him was sooo good.

>>If even one of them had fallen, they wouldn't have survived
That's so true! I've also thought a lot about this since I've been thinking about writing a story set a couple of years in the future in a post-canon AU where Nomi leaks all of BPO's research and shit hits the fan. Kind of a season 3 if you will. So I was thinking in picking up the story where someone in the cluster dies as that was something that the writers toyed with as well but I can't find a way where they succeed if one of them is gone and it just gets very very sad.
Anyway, I don't think that idea will go anywhere because as you said, the eight of them work together very well. They complement each other in ways that I can't even define with human language.

Date: 2025-08-27 10:19 pm (UTC)I can't take it lol. Only happy things for them here on out. They've already been through too much.
I do wonder what their originally planned five seasons would've looked like though. Maybe it's for the best that it was canceled if they went some of the directions they could've.
