A few more recs from around the fests:

The Cottage with the Purple Door, a non-linear love story (HP/DM, R) by Anonymous over at hd_holidays

This is such a lovely story. It shows Harry's and Draco's building relationship through non-linear scenes, and not just through their eyes, but also through the eyes of their children and some of their (unlikely) friends. A wonderful story.

Come Now, And Let Me Dream It Truth (HP/DM, NC-17) by Anonymous over at hd_holidays

A sweet little mystery, with a wonderful plot, and lovely characterization.

And over the last couple of days I've been reading some golden oldies...because I had an urgent craving for some Severitus fics. Yeah, occasionally this mood just strikes me and I need my fix. So here are my three favorite Severitus fics, just in case someone else is in a similar mood and hasn't yet read any of these awesome fics.

Blood Magic (Harry, Snape, Gen) by Gateway Girl

This is a true classic when it comes to Severitus. It's long, it's got a great plot, and it's got very nice characterization of both Harry and Snape. After they learn the truth about their connection, it takes them a while to get used to it, and neither of them are perfect in this new relationship. I read this fic many years ago when it was still a WIP, and I was pleased to discover that when I reread it over the weekend, I still enjoyed it as much as I did back then.

Mine, and sequels (Harry, Snape, Gen) by Gillian

This is my absolute favourite feel-good fic. I've reread it plenty of times over the years, because it's just so good at putting me in a really good mood. Snape is Harry's father, and takes him away from the Dursleys when Harry's still quite young, to raise him at Hogwarts. Sounds very sweet, I know, but this Snape is not a sweet man...he still resembles Snape as we know him from canon, though of course throughout the story he does open up to his young son. On top of that there's Remus, and little Neville, and so many other great characters, and such a lovely plot. I simply cannot get enough of this story, and I expect I'll reread it over and over again throughout the years to come.

In Blood Only (Harry, Snape, Gen) by EM Snape

This is probably my favourite Severitus fic, for the simple reason that Harry's and Snape's characterization most closely resembles that of canon: in other words, they hate each other. Yes, even after they discover their connection, they absolutely loathe each other, and it takes a long time for that to change. It's got a nice plot on top of that, and I cannot recommend this story enough for those who like the idea of Snape as Harry's father without either one of them suddenly suffering from a personality overhaul.

As I was searching for my favourite Severitus fics last weekend, I discovered the Potions and Snitches, the Harry and Snape Gen Fanfiction Archive. And they have a very large Severitus section. So, yeah, if anyone's looking for me...that's where I'll be for the next couple of days. ;-)

Chrysalis (HP/SS, NC-17) by starcrossedgirl

This was just what I needed...a long (86k words), good Snarry! The story can be summed up as: Harry has issues after the war, and Snape helps him. But trust me, there is a whole lot more to this story than just that. It's got plot, it's got hurt/comfort and it's got some romance (but never of the flowers/chocolate variety). And there is snark...wonderful, wonderful snark. And a brilliantly slow build of their relationship, with wonderful characterization for both Harry and Snape. This is one of those stories I didn't want to see end...it was just so good. :-)

A few more recs from around the holiday fests.

On License (HP/DM, NC-17) by anonymous over at hd_holidays

This is one of those stories that is canon compliant all the way through, and yet still managed to squeeze in a great Harry/Draco story. Look not for romance here, but for gritty realism, trauma, hurt/comfort, and hope. I really enjoyed the plot, the characterization of both Harry and Draco, and all the wonderful snarky dialogue. Great fic!

In Dreams (HP/DM, NC-17) by anonymous over at hd_holidays

A wonderful adult Harry/Draco story, filled with a little mystery, a little romance, a little snark and a good plot. I enjoyed the slow build of their relationship, their (mostly) mature attitudes, and the inclusion of several characters we rarely see in fic (Dudley!). Great story.

Now, for those of you wondering...what's with all the Harry/Draco...where's the Snarry? Well, I'm wondering that, too, actually. I've been going through the Secret Snarry entries over at snape_potter, but they're all so...short. Really, the longest fic I've seen there was about 4k words, and I'm in one of those moods where I need looooong plotty fics, and for some reason there aren't any of the Snarry variety at this time. If I'm somehow wrong about this, please correct me! I just thought it was an intriguing observation...plenty of long H/D fics, yet no long Snarry stories. Was there a word limit on the Secret Snarry, or something? I'm genuinely curious about this phenomenon.

Today's Special

Remember when I used to rec fics in this LJ? Yeah, me neither. But since I've read a few fics recently that I really liked, I just have to share.

At Your Service (HP/DM, NC-17) by Anonymous over at hd_holidays

As I told the author in my comment, just this weekend I was thinking I'd love to read a good, long post-war Harry/Draco fic, since I've missed most of the fics that came out after DH as I took my fandom break. And what do you know, I saw this recced on my flist this morning and couldn't resist. It's long (almost 100k words), and it's GOOD. Even if H/D isn't usually your thing, you should read this fic for the plot, which is so fucking brilliant I can't even find words to describe it. It's a true Hogwarts story, full of mystery and teenage hormones and so much humor, and the magical theory in this story just blew me away. Really, all I can say is, if post-war H/D plotty fics are your thing, do give this one a try.

The Journey of a Thousand Miles For Everyone (Luna, Snape, Gen) by Anonymous over at hp_holidaygen
This is such a delightful Luna fic, with a wonderful dose of Snape served on the side. I absolutely loved this Luna, how she struggles with life after the war and with what her father had done to try to save her. Snape is wonderfully in character and in his own snarky way helps Luna along in her life. Such a wonderful read that I enjoyed a great deal.

Snarry rec!

Snape: the Home Fries Nazi (Snape/Harry, NC-17) by pir8fancier (Link goes to chapter 1. Other chapters can be found in the lj, as the author posted everything today)

Summary: Snape works as a fry cook in a diner in Arizona...

Yeah, I know. Looking at that summary, you're all thinking: that's the most implausible thing I've ever seen. I thought so as well at first. But trust me when I say that this story makes A LOT of sense.

No, it isn't a Muggle AU, or even any kind of AU. It's a post-war story that touches on many important issues we're left with in HBP, and adds a couple more issues for Harry and Snape to deal with. I won't say what kind, because that would be spoiling things.

This story is filled with brilliant humor, from the way Snape runs his diner (honestly, those familiar with Seinfeld need only look at the title of this story to know what I mean) to how Snape drives a car. But there's much more than humor in this story, as Snape and Harry deal with their issues and slowly build first a friendship and later a relationship together.

A wonderful fic, which I think most of you Snarry enthusiasts will enjoy a great deal. :-)

ETA: You can read the fic in one place (instead of separate chapters on lj) here on The Archive.

Today's special, and recs wanted.

Snips and Snails (Tom, Dumbledore, NC-17) by fleshdress A ficlet featuring sneaky, pervy Dumbledore, and a wicked Tom. Probably not in the way you think, though. A very clever little story, which made me want to cheer for Tom. (Then again, when do I not cheer for Tom? *g*)

Any Means Necessary (Snape, Dumbledore, PG-13) by anonymous. Part of the springtime_gen fest. An intriguing view of a few 'missing scenes' concerning Snape and Dumbledore. I love it when people give their own spin on canon, especially when it makes you go OMGWHAT? Because it fits right into canon and yet still turns your interpretation of it upside down. And this fic does exactly that.

And a meme seen on my flist:

Rec-Go-Round: Rec me one story you've written that you're proud of, any genre, here on my LJ.

Then go forth and ask the same in yours.

I'm serious about this! Please, rec me something of yours you've written in the last 6 months or so, seeing that I've been absent from fandom for most of that time and have hardly had a chance yet to catch up, and I'm really paranoid I'm missing out on all the fic.

HP is most welcome, all pairings, genres, ratings (I always use these occasions to broaden my fictional horizon). Other fandoms I'm familiar with are: Good Omens, Buffy, Lord of the Rings, Hannibal Lecter verse, Lost, and most movie-based fandoms.

Thanks in advance!

Today's special, keeping busy, and poll on rereading habits

No Sex, No Galleons (HP/SS, RW/SS, NC-17) by ziasudra_fic Written for the hp_cliche challenge: Snape as a rentboy. But that's where all the cliches end, and a very enjoyable story begins. Great fic!

Hunger (Lucius/Fenrir, R) by ausmac A short ficlet with gorgeous writing, that explains it all about this pairing, really.

I've been keeping busy these last few days. I updated the FAQ on my website, which was terribly outdated, I did admin things for The Archive, I had a spring cleaning as far as my flist is concerned (though I mostly defriended old, inactive communities), and I deleted a few of my own communities that weren't going anywhere.

What do you mean, I should be writing my snarry_games fic? I've been writing! But those stubborn bastards don't want to get to the wild monkey sex and all they do is angstangstangst... ah, yeah, I'm on team Angst. So that explains it then. ;-)

My next projects is adding new recs on maeglin_recs. I've got dozens of fics I want to add, but every time I want to start something else comes up. So, after I finish my Snarry I'll start on this.

And while I was updating my website, I reread a few of my own fics. And it wasn't even all that bad (though some of my earlier fics made me want to open the docs and edit them something good).

So now I'm wondering: do you reread your fics? At all? A poll with no scientific value, just plain old curiosity on yours truly's part.

Poll #703706 Rereading habits

Do you reread your own fics?

Sure, all the time. I'm confident that way.
44(21.6%)
Sure, but only some of them. Others I happily deny the existence of.
117(57.4%)
Are you crazy? And take time away from reading fics by other authors?
10(4.9%)
God no, I'd rather go to school/work naked than suffer through rereading my stuff.
10(4.9%)
Fics? What fics? I'm an artist/archivist/lurker/meta-ish person, dammit!

Today's Special, and writing update

A Lesson in Breaking (HP/SS, DM/SS, NC-17) by fleshdress Warning: dub-con bordering on non-con.
I'm not going to say anything about this fic or else I might spoil it, but if you like your snarry with a dose of dub-con and a brutal, unforgiving Snape, go read this.

The Cure (HP/SS, PG-13) by dracofiend
A lovely, light post-war fic, with a nice slow build of the relationship between Snape and Harry. Lots of humor, too. Wonderful fic.

Caribbean Cartography (Norrington/Sparrow, R) by cupiscent I don't read a lot of Pirates of the Caribbean fic, but fluffyllama recced it yesterday, so I gave it a try. I'm glad I did, because this fic is the best Norrington/Sparrow story I've read to date. Both Norrington's and Sparrow's voices are so good, and there's lots of plot, and lots of subtle humor, and lots of little details about life in the Caribbean that make this fic so damned plausible. If you've ever been curious about this pairing, try this story. Trust me. ;-)

On writing news: I'm busy with my entry for snarry_games. I started with one idea, wrote a bit for it, then discarded it since it wasn't going anywhere. I got a new idea, sat on that for a while until it finally clicked in my mind, and I've been writing it ever since. It feels good so far, and it will be longish.

It's nice to be writing something again. RL has kept me too busy over the last few months, but now I feel like I can again devote some time and energy on writing. A very good thing, because I have much I'd like to write. Besides this Snape/Harry fic, I want to write more on my Harry/Voldemort WIP, I want to write another story for my Harry, Edward (HP/AB crossover) series, and I want to write for the challenges I claimed for crossover_hp. But Snarry first, because OMG deadline!

Today's Special, and more links

Of Dog and Chimp (Sirius Black/George W. Bush, PG) by unsymbolic
Summary: What is on ‘the other side of the veil’? Maybe it’s something far more sinister than death. Maybe it’s the Bush White House!
I know there are some of you out there who think: OMG, WTF? That was my first response as well when I saw the pairing. But trust me, this fic is very, very funny and definitely worth the read.

Of Heroes and Villains (Lily Potter, PG-13) by petulantgod
Summary: She might die, but he won't. He can't. And as long as he lives, she lives. James lives. Harry is not going to die.
Beautiful and powerful. It captures Lily's thoughts and emotions very well.

The wizard_trauma ficathon is open for challenge claiming.
I'm really looking forward to this fest. So many interesting scenarios, and so many interesting fics to look forward to. And of course, I couldn't resist claiming a challenge as well. Honestly, I can't be expected to pass up something like this:

Instead of killing Voldemort, Harry miams him. As the result, Voldemort is either powerless and insane, or magicless and disabled (or any combination thereof), but alive. What happens to him further? How does Harry react?

I'm looking forward to writing insane!Voldemort. Well, insaner!Voldemort. ;-)

emmagrant01 posted the Smutfics Survey Results. And I got a mention, too. It warms me to think that some part of fandom wanks to one of my fics. My job here is done. ;-)

And do I really need to comment on the 100 userpics thing? Everyone else has already been squeeing so beautifully on my flist. All I will say is: OMG, I'll never find enough icons to fill all those empty slots.

Oh, and what the heck...one more tiny pimp for darklord_news. If you want to keep up to date with everything Voldemort and Riddle in this fandom, go there now! :D

The Last Command (Snape, Harry, PG-13) by mimiheart
Summary: Snape and Harry must learn to work together in order to win the war. (A Snape mentors Harry story)
A WIP, with seven chapters posted so far. It starts right where HBP left us, and the writing is wonderfully in line with canon.

Some art I've enjoyed today:

nassima posted this gorgeous piece of Sirius art: Sirius and his bike.

honeybean did a wonderful portrait of Tom Riddle.

And buttfacemakani drew Tom Riddle with Slytherin's locket.

I was browsing snarry_reader earlier, and I saw these two hilarious works of art. How I missed them in the first place, I don't know, but in case any of you missed them, too, let me give them a pimp:

pen_and_umbra created the Illustrated Guide to the Capture and Upkeep of Potions Masters. There are five parts in total. Be sure to check them all out.

And acid has created t0il_n_tr0uble, a Harry/Snape webcomic. Browse the journal to find the first entry at the bottom, and then read up.
