Prop 8 in CA, along with along with similar constitutional amendments in Arizona and Florida, and an Arkansas law that only allows married couple to adopt, were all passed last week. In a time when we should be proud of our progress in regards to the civil rights movement we instead have to deal with this miscarriage of justice.
As Thomas Jefferson said "
There are rights which it is useless to surrender to the government and which governments have yet always been found to invade. These are the rights of thinking and publishing our thoughts by speaking or writing; the right of free commerce;
the right of personal freedom. There are instruments for administering the government so peculiarly trustworthy that
we should never leave the legislature at liberty to change them."
Constitutions are for the protection of human rights, not for taking them away.
To fight the inequality of these states denying rights to a group of citizens join the Nation wide Nov 15th protests at 1:30 EST. For more information go to
Join the Impact. I personally am trying to decide between Baltimore and DC.
On a side note. How Heterosexuals can support gay marriage. This is particularly for unmarried or soon the be married people. If your state doesn't allow gay marriage then
boycott marriage. Write a letter to your reps stating your intent. If your state allows a civil union then get on instead or go through the long and drawn out legal process of getting power of attorney and health care benefits without marriage. Talk to friends and family about this and publicize the boycott on marriage as much as possible. Not only will this raise awareness about the difficulties faced by dedicated homosexual couples to gain societal and legal recognition, but will show straight support of the gay movement. And also,
do you really feel alright with taking advantage of civil rights not shared by all US citizens?
