Dear Yuletide writer,
I'm really just tickled that I'm getting a story; I'm not actually all that picky about the details. In general, I love snappy dialogue and strong characterizations, and I've got a weakness for lyrical language. In any fandom, I love found families, and I like any intra-team strife in those families to get worked through. I will cop to being a fan of redemption and reconciliation narratives, especially when there are serious impediments to those journeys. I like to see the characters I love find meaningful, powerful endings and some measure of peace, even if those endings aren't exactly happy (though I'm totally okay with happy!) I am also a fan of intimate body language and physical affection, whether it's in the context of a sexual relationship or not; in fact, I think the most intimate thing people can do is actually sleep together. I'm good with classic tropes (Sentinel and Guide Aus, going back in time, soulmates, zombie apocalypses, Lovecraftian, sedoretus, groundhog days, personal animal daemons, telepathic bonding, and shifter AUs spring to mind) if you're feeling so inclined, and if you want to try a crossover or fusion with something I know (see my recs on Ao3 for a pretty good idea what I know, or drop me an anon question here) I am cool with that, too. I tend to view A/B/O with mixed feelings, though; sometimes it works, sometimes it squicks me. I welcome TransTide, Queering the Tide, Yuleporn, Two for One, Femslash Festivus, Yulebuilding, Three Turtle Doves, and interactive fiction, but I honestly do NOT think I can handle Crueltide this year. 2025 has already been a lot for me. That isn't to say that some horror and darkness are off the table, just that I'm not sure I have the spoons for the unrelenting, unleavened darkness of Crueltide. I am also not really into Babytide just as a general thing. I mostly find graphic rape, non-con, BDSM, romanticized adultery (note: I do not equate poly with this), and incest squicky. I'm a slasher, femslasher, and gen reader and writer, so it's safe to assume I'm okay with any of those. (Personally, I'm a demisexual pansexual with a queerplatonic life partner, so my idea of what love, intimacy, and family mean is rather broadly inclusive.) Also, I'm perfectly comfortable with any rating, from G to NC-17. If you're feeling the Yuleporn, go for it. If you're feeling the gen, go for that. As long as it's character-driven, I'm down with it.
Here are a few extra optional fandom-specific notes if you want them:
If you drew me for The Kystrom Chronicles, you already know that I would like the band back together. I like to think that Indigo always has Sean and Tamara's vital signs right where he can see them – and do something wonderfully reckless if he thinks they're in trouble. And Sean is, of course, a contrary chaos gremlin who might plausibly turn up anywhere mixed up in anything, especially if protecting Indigo or Tamara might be involved. Tamara's got a bit more going on in the way of anchors and duties that are important to her, but I still think she'd move mountains for Indigo and Sean. If something went wrong with getting Indigo cured, for instance, I have every faith Tamara and Sean would find a way into any high-security Minister headquarters they needed to. There are lots of possibilities. I will just add that there are several things I particularly like about this canon: Sean's imp of the perverse that makes me want to shake him, Indigo's clear but restrained remorse, Tamara's efficient ferocity, and the breathlessly breakneck pacing that hurtles from one crisis to the next. But the thing I love most is the way they trust and love each other so well, and how they play off of each other's competencies and strengths.
If you drew me for Dead Zone, I've got some favorites of these in my bookmarks at AO3 that reflect what I generally like (and I wrote one, of course.) As you may have guessed from the prompt I left, I felt generally unhappy about season 6; characterization got weird, and plots didn't hang together so well. And Walt died, which, no. I love the previous seasons, though. I love that the standard love triangle doesn't turn into that tired cliche of jealousy-filled melodrama; I love that Sarah, Johnny, and Walt make a family together, and that they each genuinely care about the others. I never warmed to Sarah as much as I wanted to, but I did like the family dynamic she participated in. And I love Johnny and Walt, psychic and sheriff, fighting crime together - especially when Walt gets understanding and protective, because he's clearly paying attention to how crappy it is to have to see awful things all the time and trying to make it a little less crappy when he can. I feel like pretty much any of the classic tropes could be cool here if you'd like.
If you drew me for The Expanse, there's not a lot I can add to the official prompt. I really loved the slow growth of Bobbie and Chrisjen's relationship; it wasn't rushed or contrived, so I think it really worked well as a believable evolution from enmity to absolute faith. Chrisjen clearly recognizes Bobbie's worth and comes to trust her much earlier, but that makes sense to me from someone with such keen political instincts and interpersonal perceptiveness. Bobbie, on the other hand, resists returning that so hard, trying to cling on to her commitment to Mars above all, but she can't resist believing more in Chrisjen than anything else in the end. Going in to season 6, they're solidly united in working for humanity together, and it's beautiful and powerful. I'd love to see anything along their timeline together that explores that relationship journey, and I'm fine with going AU from the books or from wherever post-canon is going to take us if you'd like. I would just like to add that I like Arjun, and I respect his part in Chrisjen's life. I would not downplay the importance of their bond, their years together, the family that they built, or the emotional weight of Arjun's death and their argument beforehand. All of that is inescapably part of Chrisjen's emotional arc, and I don't want to imply that it isn't, or that it's somehow devalued by her moving forward from grief. Classic tropes are cool here if you like; I can especially see how sentinel/guide AUs could work here.
If you drew me for the Matthew Shardlake Series, I put a lot of my feelings about character, found family, and plot possibilities in the prompt. Also, I've got some of my favorites in this fandom in my bookmarks on AO3 that reflect what I generally like. I will add that I love the detailed and vivid sense of time and place in this series. I also love that the characters grow and change with time and experience like real people, and that they influence each other's growth. I have a particular fondness for loyalty, and for a dynamic in which there's a damaged character who finds meaning in fiercely protecting and serving someone he can really believe in. I see that for Jack with Matthew. Jack was loyal to Cromwell too, but there's a wholehearted devotion to the way he is with Matthew that's different. Bring in any other characters as you like; I do love the whole extended family. Classic tropes are cool here too, if you'd like.
If you drew me for Missing: The Other Side, you already know from my prompt that I love the feel-good, adorableness of Wook and Il-yong. I do also love the other characters, though, so feel free to bring them in if you like; the whole found family is awesome. I would love anything post-canon after Il-yong is out of prison, from a domestic slice of life to a plotty bit of sleuthing and adventure. As long as it's got that same found-family, earnest goodness of canon, I'm there for it. I love that our main characters are truly good people with good intentions, even when Wook tries unconvincingly to pretend otherwise.
Love,
Lyr
