Is that it?

So, I'm sure everybody knows the McRib is back at Mcdonald's. Having never had one, I decided to try one before they disappear again. It was good, I guess. I don't regret having it, but I can't see what makes this sandwich any better than any of the other barbeque sandwiches I've had. I think they started only featuring the McRib once a year because if it was available all the time people would figure that out and quit buying them with such fervor. Or maybe I'm just cynical. It's certainly happened before.

(no subject)

So yesterday I was looking into setting up a Youtube account. I wondered why they kept bringing up Google, until I read a line that stated you MUST have a Google account in order to sign up on Youtube. It's not easier or more convenient; it's mandatory. What the fuck is this shit? Why should I have to give up my email address to a search engine so I can log into a video site? What next, I won't be able to google something unless I open a Facebook account?

Double standards

I didn't watch the Super Bowl, but apparently there was some controversy over one of the commercials. Specifically I'm talking about the Pepsi add in which the wife spends all her time taking "bad" food away from her husband, sometimes forcibly, until the end where he finds out the Pepsi is okay because it's low-calorie (but full taste).

I heard a lot of complaints about the stereotypical portrayal of Black women as cold and domineering (which, as a Black woman myself does sting a little), but not a word about the idea of a woman -of any race- dictating what her husband can and can't eat. Or watch, or listen to, or do in his spare time, or who he keeps as friends, now that I think about it. I object to that because it's a huge double standard. If someone put out an ad that depicted a man taking anything away from his wife, even if it really was out of concern for her health, it'd never fly. You'd have the National Organization for Women rioting in the streets, and boycotts declared left and right. Any hint of potentially controlling behavior is immediately deemed abuse, and how dare you make light of something like that?

Here's the thing: abuse is abuse. Controlling behavior is controlling behavior, now matter the gender of the person doing it. If it's wrong for one gender to do, it should be wrong for both.

Don't get me wrong, I know race is still an issue. I just don't think it's right to ignore one issue in favor of another. Especially when one of the issues is so prevalent that people don't even consciously think about it before doing it.

I just noticed...

I just noticed something about the way the English language has changed. There was a time when you would "throw someone to the wolves". Now, you would "throw someone under the bus". When did that happen? And why? I think it's related to the fact that a majority of people live in urban environments, meaning that buses are more familiar than wolves to most. I could be wrong...

Oh, I'm stupid, right?

I have something to say to the advertising industry: You're not fooling me. Some other folks might fall this latest ploy, but not me.

What ploy, you ask? Simple: there is no such thing as a "partial zero-emission vehicle". There just isn't. Either it's zero-emission or it isn't. If you want to call it "low-emission" that's fine. Better than fine; it's actually true. But when you claim the car you're trying to sell me is "partial zero-emission", you're bullshitting me. And I don't appreciate that shit at all.

And while I'm on the subject, I'd like to tell the good folks at Safeway something: there is no such thing as a "semi-boneless" leg of lamb. Either it has bones, or it doesn't. It isn't hard to grasp. Unless you're trying to bullshit me too. And we've already covered how I feel about that.

Well that's odd...

This time last year I was ready to string up Santa by his sack because I was sick of hearing about him, but so far this year, I haven't heard a word about Christmas from anybody. Weird.
