Title: Story and Time
Rating: G
Theme: Summertime Blues
Elements: 320
Author's Notes: This was inspired by a Tolkien quote:
What fate awaits him [the elf] beyond the confines of this world, we cannot know. It is likely that the elf does not know himself. It is possible that nothing awaits him, outside of the World and the cycle of Story and Time.
Summary: Boromir meets an Avari elf. The word count proved a little on the small side for the story I wanted to tell. Hopefully you'll manage to read some of it between the lines.
Word Count: 320

Story and Time

1.
It takes a while to get accustomed to be borne along by the rush of seconds, and it gets harder as he leaves the edge of the sea.

He bade farewell to the mussel pickers and they looked searchingly at him as he did so. Perhaps they sensed the loneliness of the weather-beaten man in front of them. A man discarded by time and pulled back in again.

2.
Boromir doesn't notice the elf before he stands right beside him. The eyes that meet his are like spheres filled with green liquid. Boromir uncurls his fingers as he decides once more to trust the kindness of strangers.
"May I sit with you?" the elf asks. Boromir can only nod in response.
At first he sits withdrawn into his tightly wound cloak, but the elf ignores his unease. And as he leans back beside him against the tree, Boromir begins to relax.

Afterwards he can never remember other than brief snatches of the conversation that followed, in front of the fire they lit when darkness painted the emerald forest deep indigo.

You seem different from...
Perhaps. We'll never leave, unlike them. And we keep to ourselves and fight no wars. You could say we're less human...

The elf laughs a river-rush, wind-through-the trees-laugh, and fixes his shimmering liquid-green eyes on Boromir.
Like dragonfly wings....

Are you immortal?
We fade eventually and leave only our voices behind. We belong here, inside the cycle of story and time. Like you...

Small structures loom out of the darkness and large structures dwindle. Boromir shivers - unsure if he or the world will stay or run.

Will you stay with me until morning?
...I'll stay.

What is my story?
Boromir closes his eyes.

Once there was a City. Inside the City was a blue fountain. Inside the fountain was a dead tree.
By the tree is a king, cupping a white flower.

Boromir sleeps.

I very much enjoyed following this story, it was always intriguing and thoughtful. I was surprised to find the Epilogue so dark, though I gather there may be more of a history than I'm aware of. Hyacinth shows a side of the Shire I've not often seen—good thing SHE didn't know anything about the Ring! I really liked Merry's forced apology to Amethyst (tempered as it was by Frodo's benign influence), and Pippin's sister's fondness for their little brother was very sweet. The grave, grown Pippin was a quiet delight. Thank you so much!

Oh, I'm so glad that you've enjoyed it!

Well, the Epilogue of course, was always going to have to reflect the history I had already laid down for Hyacinth, in my story "A New Reckoning".

There are very *few* wicked hobbits in my Shire: Lotho and Lobelia, Lalia and Sandyman are canon. And I have another small handful of OCs who fall into that category. But it only takes one or two to make some major trouble. I agree: the Ring in Hyacinth's hands would have been as big a disaster as the Ring in Lotho's hands!

Actually, this whole story goes far back, when I was first writing "A New Reckoning", when Eglantine discovers Hyacinth's animosity to Pippin, she thinks about how awful it might have been if she had ever allowed Hyacinth to watch over Pippin. Marigold told me at the time that she would *love* to see a story in which just such a thing happened...

Well, Merry did *choose* to apologize--grudgingly, yet he felt sorry for Amethyst at the last. And yes, Frodo's influence is very much felt here. Pippin tends to be forgiving by nature, Merry tends to need a reason to forgive, and a bit of encouragement from others--like Frodo. Frodo was, of course, a *profound* influence on both his little cousins.

I like to show Pippin having a fond and affectionate relationship with his sisters. I know many who like to write as estranged from one or more of them, but I couldn't do that to Pippin.

I'm also glad you liked seeing my adult Pippin, reflecting all he had learned from Frodo and from his experiences, and taking very seriously his task as message-bearer for his cousin Reggie. Hyacinth could not help but be impressed, in spite of herself.

How sad and terrible for her, that she never realized all her trials were her own fault, until it was too late.

This was interesting to write, so I hope those who've read it have enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed working on it.

I know I have!
