Chapter 19. Kidnapped
DOCTOR!
The Doctor shot upright, banging his head violently on the console, as the urgent plea screamed in his head. Rose?
Doctor! Help me! Pain and panic screamed in tandem with the words and he scrambled to his feet, hearts thudding painfully.
Rose? He received no answer.
‘JACK!’ he hollered, bending over the console as Jack cannoned into the room.
‘What is it?’
‘We’ve got trouble. Rose. I need your wrist comp.’ Jack immediately tossed it to him, watching as the Doctor tied it into the TARDIS and used it to pinpoint Rose’s position using her key. Jack unholstered his blaster as the Doctor sent the ship into flight. Within moments they were behind the boutique Rose had been visiting. Grabbing his wrist comp, Jack and the Doctor shot out of the TARDIS, Jack scanning for Rose’s bio-signature.
‘I’m not getting a reading, Doc!’ Jack announced, anxiety lacing his words.
‘You wouldn’t.’ The Doctor’s voice was flat and dead. Jack felt his stomach drop as he surveyed what the Doctor had found. In an untidy heap against the back wall of the shop were Rose’s belongings; her phone, shopping bags and purse. What really turned Jack’s heart to stone was what he saw next. Rose’s clothes, the outfit she’d been wearing, lay shredded on the ground. On top of the remains of her garments sat the TARDIS key.
‘Oh my God!’ Jack breathed.
The Doctor picked up the key with trembling fingers, his other hand clenching in the tattered remains of the t-shirt he’d so admired earlier that morning. He felt like his world was imploding. This couldn’t be happening.
He closed his eyes, forcing his head into some semblance of calm order, as he sought Rose with his mind. After a few desperate moments he found her golden presence; he could still feel her, she was alive. Probing the link, however, he perceived that she was unconscious. More alarming still, she was already too far away for him to get a more definite sense of her location. She seemed to be moving away from him rapidly and he surmised she was in some sort of transport.
‘She’s alive,’ he ground out, standing up stiffly, clutching Rose's key so tightly Jack thought it might draw blood. The Time Lord's face was a bleak mask. As Jack watched, his free hand slipped into his jacket pocket, clenching and unclenching around whatever he found there.
‘She’s unconscious and moving at speed. I can’t trace her, I’m not a powerful enough telepath.’
‘What about the TARDIS?’
The Doctor looked at him, his face suddenly coming alive. ‘Oh, of course. Well done, Jack. She’s bonded with Rose! She should be able to find her. Come on.’ He sped back into the ship. Jack gathered the rest of Rose’s belongings and followed him.
***************
Rose was slowly coming to awareness. Her head ached fiercely and she felt sick. She opened her eyes slowly, only to blink in panic when total blackness met her. For a few terrified moments she thought she was blind, until she perceived a thin crack of light to her right and she realised she was in some sort of boot of a vehicle. They were moving, of that she was certain; she was being rocked about. As she hit against a wall she realised that she was naked. Further sensations impacted with her tired brain; she was cold and was lying on metal.
She tried to move and felt a powerful wave of nausea sweep through her. Gasping in overly warm and rather stale air, she tried to still her heaving stomach. Closing her eyes she breathed in and out fiercely through her nose until the nausea passed. She slowly catalogued her body; apart from her state of undress she appeared unharmed. Most importantly, the orange glow of her baby was still vibrant in her mind. She thought she felt a ripple of anxiety as the foetus shifted inside of her and she quickly sent soothing sensations to her womb, mentally rocking her child. The movements stilled and she pressed a relieved palm to her belly, allowing the sense of her child to anchor her.
Battening down on her own panic, she reached out for the Doctor with her mind, trying to ignore her growing fatigue. She could feel him, but her connection was weak. Doctor? She tried to concentrate, feeling the link to him stretching, becoming thinner and thinner. She was moving away from him. Using all her energy she tried once more. Doctor? She managed before, exhausted, she descended into darkness once more.
***************
Doctor?
Doctor?
Letting out a triumphant bark, the Doctor and TARDIS focused on Rose’s weak cry. As the Doctor bashed a console control with fervour, the ship raced to follow the call. The ship stuttered as the connection to Rose faltered, Rose was unconscious again. Cursing, the Doctor linked his mind to the TARDIS, using his connection to Rose to bolster hers. The TARDIS’s direction grew more certain and moments later they landed with a thud.
‘Ready?’ The Doctor asked Jack.
‘Locked and loaded,’ Jack responded. Nodding curtly, the Doctor led the way to the doors and, after a second of hesitation, afraid of what might be beyond, he thrust them open. He came to a shuddering halt, his gaze despairing. Jack stepped from behind him.
‘Oh Shit!’ He exclaimed.
