Chapter 18. Trouble Brewing
The Doctor was under the TARDIS console when Jack and Rose returned from their shopping trip. Rose sat on his legs and giggled when he sat up sharply, hitting his head on the underside of the console.
‘Ouch!’ He rubbed his head gingerly, further messing up his already ridiculously untamed hair. He pouted and Rose laughed, leaning forward to peck a brief kiss to his parted lips. He smiled at her goofily, taking in her happy, glowing appearance and the large pile of bags Jack was in the process of depositing on the floor.
‘Did you have a good time?’
‘Lovely.’ Rose nodded vigorously, ‘Got you a present.’ She wriggled down his legs and leant sideways, plucking a small bag from the pile. She handed the bag over, biting her lip with sudden nerves in case he didn’t like it.
The Doctor opened the bag and pulled forth a tie made of a material rather like silk. It was TARDIS blue and embroidered on its face were two slender silver trees, their branches gradually merging as they ascended the tie.
‘Do you like it? I had them make it especially. Here, look, there are cuff-links to match.’ She plucked another box from the bag and handed it to him. Inside were two cuff-links, each had a blue enamelled background surrounding a silver tree.
‘They’re lovely, Rose. Thank you.’
‘You really like them?’
‘Yes, I really like them.’
Rose beamed and bounced on his legs slightly. ‘I got something else I think you’ll enjoy, but that’s for later.’ She grinned and he surmised that later meant in the bedroom.
‘What else did you get, then?’ He asked.
Jack smirked; the Doctor was so going to regret asking that question. He reckoned there was at least an hour-long fashion parade in the answering. He decided to leave them to it. As he’d suspected, as he left the room Rose was already unpacking a bag, determined to show the Doctor each and every item she’d acquired.
************
The Doctor had just finished carting the last of Rose’s purchases to their new bedroom. Rose was busily putting the items away. Fingering the small box in his pocket, he watched her as she contentedly bustled around the room.
‘Rose, I thought maybe we could go out for dinner tonight, what do you think?’
Rose turned to look at him, frowning. ‘Could we wait ’til tomorrow? I got a new dress today, but it needed taking up and it won’t be ready before then.’
He struggled to hide his disappointment, ‘No, that’s fine. Tomorrow it is.’
Rose wasn’t fooled. ‘We can go tonight if you really want to, I can find another dress.’
He looked at her carefully, feeling a very unusual sense down his link to her. She was feeling insecure about her appearance. He realised the new dress was very important to her. She felt good in it, despite her baby bump. He smiled. His gift would wait one night.
‘No, Rose, it’s fine, really. We’ll go tomorrow.’ He noticed her uncertainty had not completely dissipated. ‘Now,’ he said, eyebrows arching in what he hoped was a suggestive manner, ‘What was this other gift you were telling me about?’
Rose blushed and pointed to a pink wrapped package on the dressing table. He bounded over and ripped the paper asunder with the enthusiasm of a five year old on Christmas morning. His excitement was amply rewarded as he pulled forth a red silk and lace nightdress. Almost sheer and impossibly delicate and he wanted to see her in it, now.
She giggled delightedly at the fervent wish he sent down their link. Waltzing over to him, she plucked the article from his grip and sashayed off to the bathroom to change into it. When she emerged a few minutes later the Doctor thought he might spontaneously combust. The gown accentuated her fuller breasts, hinting at more than it actually showed, before flowing down and out, skimming curves suggestively. He realised he was gaping like a fish and snapped his mouth closed. She twirled for him and the hem drifted up, exposing creamy thighs. The Doctor closed the gap between them in two strides, catching her mid twirl, he pulled her against his length, letting her feel the effect she was having on him. Her tinkling laugh was cut short as he bent to devour her mouth with his own. After that, the only sounds that could be heard from their room were their soft moans as he proved to her very thoroughly that he definitely appreciated his present.
*************
Rose was feeling immensely pleased with herself as she wandered back to the maternity boutique the next morning. Her new lingerie had gone down a storm with the Doctor, as he’d demonstrated repeatedly. He clearly delighted in the evidence of her pregnancy to the extent that her new outfit this morning had been taken off only moments after she’d put it on. She smiled at the memory, smoothing a hand over her ‘Trouble Brewing’ emblazoned bump. Given the enthusiastic reception the simple t-shirt had gotten she really couldn’t wait to see his reaction to the dress she was on her way to collect.
She thought she was finally coming to terms with being pregnant. The scan had made it feel real, but it had felt too soon. She’d been frightened the Doctor would no longer be attracted to her and had despaired at the sudden changes in her body that made her feel fat and lumpy and entirely unfamiliar. The Doctor had made it clear he still found her desirable, however, and the movements of her baby girl within her filled her with a sense of awed love.
She still wished she could talk to her mum, though. She had no terms of reference for what was happening to her. Her body was changing, she was experiencing emotions she had no idea how to process and, if she thought about it too carefully, she was terrified of what was to come. She knew the Doctor and Jack would be there for her but she really wanted another woman to talk to. She decided she’d ask the Doctor if they could visit Sarah-Jane next. She really needed some female company, just for a little while. Smiling, she entered the boutique.
Five minutes later Rose emerged into the sunshine, clutching her new purchases and daydreaming about the meal out the Doctor had planned for that evening. She was still grinning happily to herself as the hand clamped over her mouth.
‘Don’t move!’ A voice rasped next to her ear.
Rose writhed automatically, struggling against the arm restraining her, moving her head desperately to try and free her mouth. Her bags fell unheeded to the ground as she clawed at her captor. The hand at her mouth released for a moment and Rose drew in a breath to scream, only to find a rough cloth pressed against her nose and mouth. With horror she realised it was soaked in some kind of drug. As her head began to feel woozy and her limbs heavy she did the only thing she could think of, she screamed for the Doctor with her mind. She was still screaming as she slumped into unconsciousness, mercifully unaware of what was happening to her body.
