this is like basic foundational misogyny 101 but the fact that it's almost unconsciously ingrained to consider trousers a more "practical" alternative to skirts across the majority of human cultures does make me feel a little kicked in the head. this isn't even anything against pants, it's just that skirts are functionally not dissimilar at all. they're comfortable, capable of being tailored to suit a variety of purposes both aesthetic and functional, and simply what some people prefer. and yet, because they're so strongly tied to women and femininity, they're derided. a long skirt is an impediment; shortening a skirt is a sexual act. throughout history humans of all demographics have worn skirts and skirt-like clothing for a variety of purposes, but to wear a skirt in our enlightened modern age is a heavily gendered and politically loaded act. and we just tolerate living like this. fucking unreal.

Can anyone here with a more sophisticated computer science background than I have explain to me, in an intermediate fashion, how agentic LLMs work and what they are actually currently capable of (and, what they realistically will be capable of)?
I would consider myself to have an outdated laywomans understanding of LLMs. I had taken a computational linguistics course just prior to when chatGPT exploded, and do not need explained to me what a token is. But it is obvious my model of LLMs as stochastic parrots is outdated to some degree.
You might be wondering why id ask tumblr of all places, but aside from the fact i know there are some at least closer-to-experts here, there are a few reasons.
- A lot of intermediate explanations for LLMs are outdated and do not reflect the current "agentic" models widely used in the tech industry.
- Lay explanations Ive read of agents I have seen are very heavy on metaphor, and do not actually explain the mechanical underpinnings of their emergent behavior. Many of them refuse to speculate and claim that they are impossible to understand! Surely someone at least has a *hypothesis*, right?
- LLMs are produced by an industry with a vested interest in misleading people. Claims that their technology will reach AGI in 6 months/5 years/10 years/at some point, that their models are too advanced to release to the public, that their models are so sophisticated not even they understand them, that they will bring about utopia or dystopia or an apocalypse, and etc, are rampant and serve an obvious function of generating hype, fear, and other buzz. It makes it really hard to seperate wheat from chaff when the experts have such a vested interest in lying to you.
- Sholarly articles on this subject are beyond my expertise
Essentially simple explanations are unsatisfactory and expert knowledge is difficult to grasp. Search engine results are full of garbage or what might be suitable but looks like garbage. I am looking for like. A 201 level introduction here basically. Articles, videos, your own understanding. Itd do a lot to relieve some of my paranoia and anxiety to have a grounded mental model of whats going on that isnt suffuse with industry nonsense.
