I have seen it! Here is what I thought of it, under a cut. I haven't yet looked at the rest of the internet, so all of this is my own opinion.
MAJOR, MAJOR SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT.
I liked it! I thought it was very good, for an Avengers movie. It wasn't really a Captain America movie, which made me a little sad, but we'll always have The First Avenger and The Winter Soldier. Some things that were very positive:
-SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM. Sam got his Redwing!! :D :D :D and a new wing design which was SUPER BADASS!!! ANd he looked very handsome on screen all the time, which is to say, he was on screen a lot. Also his banter with Bucky was A+++ and I would watch a whole road trip of those two goobers.
-I am sad for Steve that his warrior boyfriend is taking a long nap, but I am glad that he at least has a NEW warrior boyfriend, namely, T'Challa. DEAR GOD PLEASE MAKE OUT ALREADY, are my feelings about that. Also I will happily read all the fic about T'Challa tenderly caring for Buckyuntil he realizes that Bucky likes it rough and then they do that a lot.
-T'Challa was SO. EXCELLENT. His arc felt satisfying to me, his powers and tech were awesomely impressive, and he got to have a lot of feelings. I would have liked to see him on screen more, but that's why we're getting a whole movie of him, I guess!! I'm psyched for that. I do find it a little... weird... that T'Challa is the one who has to be the Bigger Person and not kill the bad dude while Tony Stark gets to rampage his feelings out for however many minutes, but T'Challa definitely made the right decision, so at least I'm glad we get to see him being a good person.
-Watching Natasha Romanoff kick ass is everlastingly satisfying. I feel like they really upped her game in terms of how powerful they make her look; one of my movie-going buddies pointed out that in this movie, they finally gave her the same heavy-punch sound effects they usually only give to the men. I love that they did the call back to her choking move with Bucky in CA:TWS. I love that she actually did what she thought was right at every step of the movie.
-STEVE'S FACE IN THE FUNERAL SCENE, I FUCKING CANNOT. I pretty much started sobbing when I realized they gave JMS' famous Cap line to Peggy. It was beautiful and their love is beautiful and I am a puddle.
-In the helicopter scene, where Cap's muscles are hanging out for all the world to see, the dudely dudes in the row behind us started making noises like "oh my goooood" and I was like HAHAHAHA, YEAH, YOU'RE GAY FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA. AS IS CORRECT.
-This isn't really a spoiler, but I think my favorite part of this movie-going experience was seeing all the women in Cap swag. Cap hoodies, Cap tshirts, I was wearing my Cap dress (which the popcorn clerk complimented me on!!)... there was one lady in a Captain America hoodie whose hair had gone completely white from age. Lots of us smiled at each other. I am so full of feelings.
Other facets of the movie were awkward and/or complicated; I feel weird that this whole film was basically Tony Stark Works Through Some Feelings Part Twenty when nominally it was supposed to be about Steve, especially given that it walked back a lot of character growth from IM3 (although I guess that's really Age of Ultron's fault, if we're laying blame). I did not like the film's use of dead nonwhite people to provoke white people's pathos at all.
Also, I realize this will probably be a minority opinion, but I didn't really care about the Tony/Peter Parker friendship scene; I liked Spidey and I LOVED the Queens-Brooklyn banter with him and Cap, but I just thought the movie wanted me to like Spiderman way more than I did. One of the people I saw the movie with had a hard time distinguishing this actor from Tobey Maguire, and the more I think about it, the more I'm like yeah, that's legit. It was a cute addition but I really could've done with a cameo instead of a whole trailer for another set of movies I'm definitely never going to watch. (Where is my Miles Morales Spiderman movie. WHERE.)
I will concede that Paul Rudd was funny. They used him just the right amount, like garlic salt.
Also possibly an unpopular opinion: I liked that the movie was sad. I think it's interesting that the two best friends (lbr, BOYFRIENDS) of the heroes (yes I mean Sam and Rhodey) end the film still solidly in opposition with one another, for what are mostly good reasons. I'm not sure where the universe will go from here, but I am actually interested in it. I kind of wonder if the reason this movie became an Avengers flick instead of a Cap movie is that it was intended to replace Age of Ultron, thematically: it achieved both diagetically and extradiagetically what Age of Ultron attempted to do but could not.
Anyway, if anyone wants to see it who hasn't and needs a buddy, just call me. I'll be there. :D
(Oh, P.S.: I feel very personally validated that Captain America drives a blue VW bug. YES THAT IS MY CAR, CORRECT!!!!)

Date: 2016-05-10 06:34 am (UTC)I loved T'Challa (men who move like big cats, yes, thank you, I will watch that a lot), I went utterly squish at the "plant yourself like a tree" line without even knowing its original context because YES thank you Peggy is still being awesome even from beyond the grave, and I think it did a laudable job of juggling a recrackulously large quantity of superheroes in a single story.
And seriously, the moment where Cap flips his grip so that first you get to admire his tricep, then his bicep. <roflmao> It was such blatant eye candy, and I did not mind at all.
