James settled himself outside the portrait hole to wait for Marlie. He had to admit the journals were pretty convenient. Kept him from waiting impatiently anyhow. He also had to admit, if he was quite honest with himself, that Sirius' whinging about his Bowie record was getting on his nerves.
Why else would he be reduced to making a run to the kitchens with a girl? Not that he minded Marlie. They were friends, and she was certainly a better sport about pranks than Evans. Anyhow, she'd be a stealthy enough companion about this mission. He debated briefly about whether to use the cloak. He usually reserved it for Marauders-only missions, and Marlie wasn't a Marauder . . . he stuffed it in his school satchel in case and scrawled a note to Marlie in his journal.
Less talk, more walk. Where ARE you?
30 seconds. her script appeared on the page before his eyes. Now I'm opening the portrait. Wait for it...
"There you are!" James grinned, mussing his hair up at the back. "You took long enough! What were you doing? Lipstick? Those wonky eye pencils?"
