LOGODAEDELI

Welcome to the Logodaedelus Society. The word Logodaedelus comes from "Logo" meaning "word" and "Daedelus", the name of the father of Icarus in the Greek myth about the two guys who made themselves wings out of feathers and one of them flew too close to the sun. A Logodadelus is actually a person who makes up new words. William Shakespeare is a prime example of a Logodaedelus, and although many of his words and expressions may not have caught on at first, many are commonly used in the English language today.

Shakespeare can be credited with the following phrases:
"In a Pickle"
"In one fell swoop!"
"..shuffled off his mortal coil." and more

Until recently I didn't know there was such a word for something my friends and aquaintances do all the time, but this makes us, too, logodadeluses...or is that logodaedeli? From an early age my friends and I were always creating our own unique words and phrases and adopting other words and phrases based on various mispronunciations and spoonerisms. These I will share in this community and this is also where we welcome your own contributions. It's like we've created our own languages.

Those of you who are familliar with my personal LJ will notice I often use the word "Guyeere"! (pronounced like "guy-ear!" My husband will sometimes respond to me by saying "Girl-nose!") This expression originated when my best friend Janette was just a toddler and we've been using it in recent years as an all-purpose expression of glee. It has come to mean "Eureka!" "I found it!" "YESSS!", "Excellent!", "Hurray!", "Praise the Lord" and just about every happy, positive expression you can think of all rolled into one.

Those of you who already know me know that I have Asperger's Syndrome. I believe that creativity and the ability to be a logodaedelus are among the more positive traits of this condition.

I am always on the lookout when I read old postcards for peculiar expressions and inside jokes...

On a more serious note...
