Save The Harvey House!

What may be the last known frame building by the renowned architecture firm of Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler is facing dmolition. It seems ironic that 35 years after the tragic loss of the Old Chicago Stock Exchange Building (which actually resulted in the death of a preservationist, seeking to save artifacts) we would still have to mobilize to save an Adler and Sullivan building.

But, sadly, that is just the case. In early June it came to the attention of Preservation Chicago that the Harvey House, located at 600 W. Stratford Place in the Lakeview neighborhood, is now threatened with demolition. Its current owner has given notice to Alderman Helen Shiller (46th) that she plans to demolish the building. The current zoning would allow for between 8 and 10 condominium units to be built.

In addition to being classified as an Orange Rated building by the Chicago Historic Resources Survey (CHRS), the house is also listed in the AIA Guide to Chicago, a book of Chicago’s most important buildings. Built at a time when Lakeview was still a suburb, the home allows a rare glimpse of what Lakeview used to look like.

Please take action now by calling, writing or emailing 46th Ward Alderman Helen Shiller at:

oh, and i'm way too busy right now to look at the ruling, so i have no idea how expansive it is, but my jaw is dropped: a divided Court has ruled that the 6th Amendment right to counsel is violated when a defendant is not represented by his choice of attorney. u.s. v. gonzalez-lopez.
