LITTLEST ELLE: NEW URL

I said I was gonna do it, and I have.

The Littlest Elle has moved! Please change your links and bookmarks to elle.mysky.net! Short and sweet, no?

All the archives are up and running, as well as the new comic for today (#132). I will continue updating there as part of my Monday-Friday routine. I'm hoping that this move will result in more control over the page for me (things like webtracking kind of fail on LJ) and a more welcoming atmosphere for visitors/comments. Plus... it's a much easier URL to give out this way. I can stick it on the bottom of mini comics and things :)

just a head's up

So, I've been dragging my heels on this for a while, but a combination of inspiration from APE and outrage at livejournal are motivating me to move Littlest Elle to a proper website/blog format. This way I can have more control over the site and the site should be more welcoming to non livejournal users.

I'm setting up the subdomain and fiddling around with wordpress as we speak. Hopefully I'll have the new link as of Friday!

(Really, I've been planning to do this for a while now, but livejournal joined a bunch of internet giants in accepting ad funding from a campaign that I am morally opposed to, and seeing that ad on top of my comic is a good motivating force to take my comics elsewhere.)

24 Hour Comic #4: Fitcher's Bride

Once again I participated in 24 Hour Comic Day and I have a finished 24 page comic to show for it (if you're unfamiliar with 24 Hour Comic Day, all you need to know is that I started and finished this whole thing on the fly within 24 hours or less).

My comic is loosely adapted from the fairytale Fitcher's Bird (if that's not ringing any bells, a more popular version of the story is the tale of Bluebeard). It's a deeply dark story and I've been itching to interpret some of the imagery from it for a couple years now. You don't need to know the original story at all to enjoy mine, it just explains where this story came from.

Drawn on printer paper with an old double-ended tombow brushpen/fine tip pen.




It's funny, but if I compare it to the 24 hour comic from last October I can actually see how I've improved. While I'm too tired to compare story telling, I can definitely see a lot of technical growth in how I do compositions, panels, even how I lay out text. I think that's kind of awesome.

(rejected) guest strip for Scary Go Round

Way back in April, Scary Go Round was hosting a "send me guest strips so that I can go on vacation, the best 14 shall be posted!" style open call. kaitoujeanne scripted and I drew and... alas, we didn't make it! It remains to be seen whether or not we were robbed - I think our lack of plot must have worked against us.

Still, I thought the end result was pretty rad and I am posting it here for other people to see. (Like any proper guest strip, all props go to John Allison for characters and concepts and such).

Draw Yourself as a Teenager

I'm supposed to be resting, but I couldn't resist davario's "Draw Yourself as a Teenager" meme (saw the meme on enerjak's journal. Hers is one of my favorites, check it out!).



Man, that's pretty much exactly how I look these days. OH, THE PLIGHT OF NOT BEING COOL.

EDIT: Maybe not exactly the same. I no longer wear flannel and I'm packing about 25 more pounds than I did when I was a teenager (metabolism, you are a cruel mistress).

52 Comic Challenges #9: 24 Hour Comic

24 Hour Comic #3: Rescuing Arugula

Start date: 10/20/07 at 10AM; Completion date: 10/21/07 at 2:15AM

The 52 Comics Challenge for the week was to participate in 24 Hour Comic Day (in short: make a 24 page comic on the fly within 24 consecutive hours). I've completed it twice before and loved every minute of it, but I haven't done one lately on account of my chronic "not carpal tunnel but it ammounts to the same thing" injuries that restrict my drawing time.

Still... this time, I took the plunge. My only condition was that I had to let the quality of the comic suffer so that I could take breaks/not freak my wrist out with detail and precision/generally not fall apart. That brought about some entertaining and challenging art restrictions: I had to draw straight up in pen without pencil, so no second guessing. I had to cheat in every way possible, so I included my dusty boxes of rubber stamps, collaged a little, and invented a brilliant plot twist to not require backgrounds for over half the pages (hah).

I find the result kind of cool, and I only broke my health rules for the last three pages (the urge to sleep overrode self preservation) so while my arm is pretty achey, it's still functional today! Hurray!

Also, for some reason I thought it would be keen to use construction paper and Mr. Sketch markers for "selective coloring". I can't remember why I made this decision but it brings a certain 4th grade chic to the whole thing. Enjoy.
