It was a quiet up in the attic, things slowed down after Eiji’s shift ended. He found that the window was left wide open. Ankh must have gone off to the rooftop again, or somewhere else entirely.

Luckily, he was correct with his initial guess. Climbing up and proceeding to sit by Ankh’s side. He was on his iPhone. Scrolling away on countless pages.

Smiling, Eiji’s dimples were out. “I thought I’d find you here.”

Ankh scoffed. His eyes looked right at Eiji for a second, only to go back to scrolling. A pretty typical response.

That sense of familiarity, it was really nice. Things did feel like they were going back to how they were so long ago. During his shift, Chiyoko made yet another remark commenting on how it felt like old times again.

And Eiji was grateful for that. While it felt like old times, they were also new. So incredibly new. Things were undoubtedly different when compared to that year they first had together. Countless things had happened ever since Ankh’s core split. But this was that tomorrow Eiji had longed for, ached for.

Ankh was back. He was finally home. Snarky, demanding, and hungry for ice cream as ever. Underneath it all— There was a layer of appreciation and love for the relationships and humans he’d had come to know. Despite how he acted, which was like old times, he was more than satisfied. Ankh was happy too.

You’d be hard pressed to hear him actually say it out loud, but one could certainly feel it.

Eiji looked up towards the sky. It was a beautiful shade of blue today, and the sun emitted a pleasant warmth. He slowly slid his hand on top of Ankh’s and held it firmly. It was also warm. Eiji found the heat that came from Ankh’s more comforting than the rays of the sun.

Despite Ankh’s eyes still being glued to his phone, Eiji could feel Ankh’s hand relaxing under his. Then sliding the tip of his thumb back onto Eiji’s hand.

And Eiji swore that out of the very corner of his eye— He could see Ankh with the smallest of smiles.
