These characters all belong to the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien. This story was written for pleasure and not for financial gain.
He is glad to see Sam so happy. If anyone deserved it, it is his faithful servant. Sam was meant to be a husband and father, loving and beloved. Frodo knew Sam loved him none the less, but guilt tore at him, when his needs distracted Sam from his wife and little one. He could not join in their laughter either. The dark red poppies that made Elanor gurgle with delight when they blew in the wind, made him think of blood.
He could not live like this, a spectre at the feast of life. It was time to leave.
Happy Halloween! it is great to have met a fellow photographer!
