We're at the "JK Rowling is personally funding litigation to try and destroy AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL" stage of rabid UK terf brain.

Quoted tweet from Trans Widows' Voices. @transwidows: Whilst I understand the detriment to Beira's Place is real, and focussing on @jk rowling get clicks it's a shame that mainstream press coverage of the Amnesty debacle is not also focussing on us smaller groups listed who do … Tweet thread from J.K. Rowling @jk_rowling: Should any of the women's organisations targeted by @AmnestyUK's recent 'anti-rights' blacklist wish to take legal action, applications can be made to the JK Rowling Women's Fund. jkrwf.org Gay men's organisations named on the list are welcome to contact me through my website. While the JK Rowling's Fund was set up to support women, JK Rowling herself is more than happy to donate to your legal fighting fund.ALT

Tldr Amnesty International, global human rights organisation, published a report called 'A growing threat: the anti-rights movement in the UK'. In it is detailed, amongst others, a whole bunch of transphobic groups and organisations, including Beira's Place, JK Rowling's trans exclusionary sexual violence support service. JK Rowling threw a shit fit and got Amnesty to take the report down by threatening libel. This was obviously not enough, because you can't appease a fascist, so now she's going to bankroll a bunch of lawsuits anyway through the JK Rowling Women's Fund.*

You can read an archived version of the report here, please save it and share it.

*Not so friendly reminder there is no way to engage in the wizard books without enabling this shit.

Further context: Durham city council (Reform UK) cut funding and support for Pride. The Durham Miner's Association and other trade unions raised enough money for Durham Pride 2026 to go ahead - a direct call back to when Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) raised money for mining communities when Margaret Thatcher seized union funding during the miner strikes of 1984-85.

At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.

Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Miners’ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to “encourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community […] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”

So I unfortunately just found out Google is building a massive data center (that we all know is being used for mass surveillance like all the other data centers popping up) right here in my state of Upper Austria. There is a protest this Friday, but without a car or money for public transport I don’t think I can make it. But I will try to see if there is anything else I can do in the mean time. This is happening right when the EU has announced their new chat surveillance law that none of the citizens wanted and actively fought against, and while new cars are now required in the EU to have facial recognition cameras for „safety“

It doesn’t take a genius to know what’s going on, and it’s clear our governments don’t give a shit what we want or not, so I don’t really know what to do here, but at the very least I’ll talk about it.

Mind you, this is happening while we’re in a drought, we’re being roasted by heatwave after heatwave, young people cannot afford to buy homes, our groceries cost up to 100% more than in neighboring countries, and the government still wants us to believe we’re selfish little peasants for wanting AC in our schools and hospitals.

Obviously a massive data center is going to use far more energy and water than normal people would, and it’s taking up 70 hectares of land.

And just speaking personally here, I find it utterly disgusting the way the Austrian government is constantly pushing and funding „tech startups“ „AI advancements“ and whatever but they actually purposefully make it impossible to have any other type of business. Whether you’re a small mom and pop shop that’s offering a service to your community or a craftsperson or what have you - there is no help. No financial support. They make sure everything is stacked against you, but THIS. This is what they’re choosing to invest in and encourage. Sickening. I’m so angry.

It’s been really hard for me lately to deal with just how awful things are everywhere- the increasing barbarism and cruelty all around us is stifling. But I refuse to accept that it has to be this way. If enough people wake up and CARE and fight back, they will lose.
