As many of you know, on November 10, 2006, Virgina will be voting on an amendment that if passed, will prohibit same-sex marriage and any "legal status" between unmarried people of any gender. This means that in the 55% of domestic violence cases where the couple is not married, the victim will no longer be protected under domestic violence laws- making them unable to get a protective order against their attacker. This means that custody cases where the parents are unmarried will become extremely more complex. If someone leaves money to a friend in their will, the family could sue and have the will overturned. This goes much farther than "protecting the sanctity of marriage," since in Virginia gay marriage is already not recognised. The Marshall/Newman amendment is an attack on the rights of all Virginians of any sexual orientation.
