genprompt_bingo and
trope_bingo Rec Set - Prompt: Hurt/Comfort
Oct. 3rd, 2015 08:56 pmOne of these days I will write another fic, maybe even for a bingo challenge. In the meantime, I've now filled one prompt on both my
trope_bingo and
genprompt_bingo cards with this rec set:
Fandoms: Quantum Leap, Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Voyager, Stargate SG-1

Title: Reverse Reflection
Author:
Xparrot
Rating: G
Word Count: 17,394
Summary: Post-MI, Sam is having problems with the difficulty of the Leaps and doing them alone. But he wouldn't change a thing, except maybe he doesn't have a choice... Meanwhile Project QL is giving up hope of ever finding Dr. Beckett again, and Al may have lost his best friend in time for good...
Why This Must Be Read: This fantastic post series finale fic is a different kind of fix-it and deals beautifully and convincingly with the scenario that Sam's fixing Al and Beth was maybe not a good idea in the grand scheme of things. And it's gen for a change (most of the stories I’ve read with a similar premise are slash stories in which Sam was meant for Al, not Beth -- this is something very different). It’s also just an excellent, suspenseful casefic in and of itself, with the added gravity of the leap being personal to both men in different ways, Sam injured and in peril, other people in peril that he has to help and lovely Sam-Al friendship underscoring the whole thing. Highly recommended.

Title: The First Casualty
Author:
smirnoffmule
Rating: Teen and Up
Word Count: 85,349
Content Notes: Dark themes, violence, torture, depictions of terrorism, PTSD.
Summary: A humanitarian mission on a war-torn world goes badly wrong, and Malcolm has to face the consequences.
Why This Must Be Read: Percentage-wise this story has more emphasis on the hurt than the comfort, but it's such a good trauma and recovery fic I'm reccing it again as part of this set. The story deals with captivity, torture and PTSD, and contains vivid descriptions of physical and mental torture, in addition to the violence and injuries that were typical in canon. But it's all handled very well, and the author even manages to effectively infuse in-character dry humor throughout to lighten things up a bit when needed, as well as providing lovely moments of friendship and comfort in the aftermath as we follow Malcolm recovering from his ordeal. Not just a good trauma rec fic, this is a great fic, a compelling, gripping story with excellent world building, perfectly-nailed Malcolm characterization, wonderful Malcolm-Trip moments and a lovely exploration of the complicated Archer-Reed relationship specifically post the 'Affliction' and 'Divergence' episodes. This is a really satisfying read.

Title: With Your Empty Smile And Your Hungry Heart
Author:
Thistlerose
Rating: Teen and Up
Word Count: 1,054
Content Note: Not graphic but contains assault and an attempted rape.
Summary: Turkana IV was going to kill her, she knew, if she didn't get out. Soon.
Why This Must Be Read: This is really more of a pre-canon backstory fic for Tasha Yar, based on a single scene in the 'Where No One Has Gone Before' episode, and the hurt/comfort is very understated, but this short fic is worth a look. It's a nicely done character piece, plus there's a kitty.
Fandom: Star Trek: Voyager
Title: Days
Author:
cosmic_llin
Rating: G
Word Count: 1,256
Summary: Kathryn can't let go of all the things she's left behind.
Why This Must Be Read:
cosmic_llin does an incredible job in all of the Star Trek verses and never fails to perfectly nail the characterizations and voices. This one is a gorgeous, touching character study about Kathryn on the day she was supposed to get married and dealing with Voyager's predicament, her loneliness, missing home and everything she left behind, with Tuvok providing friendship and comfort. A beautiful, angsty and heartbreaking piece.
Fandom: Stargate SG-1
Title: Any One You Walk Away From
Author:
Penknife
Rating: Teen and Up
Word Count: 4,413
Content Note: deals with torture and its aftermath; fic is locked so only logged-in AO3 account-holders can see it
Summary: Any one you walk away from is a good one, but that doesn't mean you won't carry the scars. Episode tag for 4x14 "The Serpent's Venom."
Why This Must Be Read: This is such a good team friendship fic with ¡Teal'c angst! -- which I am a sucker for -- with the team, particularly Jack being there for Teal'c. The story is told from Jack's perspective and is mostly focused on Jack and Teal'c, but it also has some wonderful moments of Jack with Sam and Daniel too.

Title: G is for Gravitational Time Dilation and the Consequences of Special Relativity
Author:
splash_the_cat
Rating: Teen and Up
Word Count: 1,483
Summary: AKA stoics doing emotional H/C. "Unending" episode tag.
Why This Must Be Read: Words cannot express how good this Jack & Teal'c friendship fic is. Perfect tag to this episode. Also iron woobies are the best.

Title: V is for Vegas Road Trip or, "When I've Got Nothing On But the Radio"
Author:
splash_the_cat
Rating: Teen and Up
Word Count: 3,673
Summary: Sam and Vala. In Vegas.
Why This Must Be Read: I love finding good fics about these two awesome ladies of SG-1.
splash_the_cat is one of my favorite writers in this fandom and this story, another one written for the Gen Fic Alphabet Soup challenge, is a terrific Sam-Vala bonding and road trip fic with perfect characterization, lots of lovely friendship and some really lovely hurt/comfort.
