works way better when you stop trying to make sense of Who Is Who And How It All Makes Sense but the movie is so meticulous and honestly tedious in its display of and subsequent attempts to piece together the disparate parts of a childhood that when the time shift comes, you're in too deep trying to understand the logic of the film that its hard to submit and let yourself be swept away by The Movie Magic.

Movie of the year. Razor-sharp precision directing from Todd Field, and a performance for the literal ages from Blanchett. Supporting cast crucially buoys this cinematic universe. Portrayal=/=endorsement, which I think a lot of people understandably forget when a movie this detailed and studied doesn't let you settle for the convenient, syllogistic truths.
