Amazed and very pleased to see an original indie film blow up at the box office. PTA once said that actors are better than any special effect, and that is 100% proven here. And with a gay playing a straight no less!!!
Emily Blunt was so good at reprising her role in the sequel that it made me appreciate even more just how fucking hilarious she is in the first movie too.
Obviously very funny, but also quite shocking and revealing when Taika and co. take to the streets and multiple real, un-scripted people shout “faggots!!” at them. I haven’t watched the feature yet, but in an interview with Vice Taika says that they tried to recreate this scene in 2012 when filming the feature and they couldn’t get anyone on the street to shout these homophobic slurs at them. Nice to see New Zealand become more tolerant over the course of a decade.
Yorgos Lanthimos doesn’t consider My Best Friend to be part of his filmography. It is not listed on his official website and it was not included in the Film Society’s recent retrospective of his work. To be fair, Yorgos co-directed this with Lakis Lazopoulos so it is not entirely his vision... but I still felt compelled to watch it because I love Yorgos that much. It turned out to be pretty difficult to get hold of this film. Surprised it…
