Trust me: nothing I say here can fully prepare you for The Rare Blue Apes of Cannibal Isle's onslaught of mind-melting WTFness and dangerous-for-all-involved whackadelic spectacle. I don’t say that lightly and I don’t say that often. The most gobsmacking insanity that’s crossed my path since Craig Denney’s The Astrologer. All hyperbole as a result of the American Film Archive/Vinegar Syndrome’s monumental unveiling of this impossible to believe artifact for all ages will be rightfully deserved. Mr. Quack Quack forever. 🪿
“That 12 year old shouldn’t be watching Lifeforce”
-Me, who saw Lifeforce at 12.
I went into Smithereens knowing nothing about it save for being an 80's indie with Richard Hell. I figured it would be in the vein of Times Square or Ladies & Gentlemen...The Fabulous Stains.
But Smithereens is a little different, and really got to me. This is a hard-hitting, uncompromising character study of a wannabe punk princess who doesn't end up getting what she wants. It shows the unglamorous side of the 80s NY art/music world you rarely see in movies…
To any 80's horror fan just discovering this film:
Read that synopsis.
You may think, "Wow. A movie that does all of that right would have to be one of the best films ever made. Could it really be as fantastic as it sounds? I mean is such an achievement in cinematic perfection possible?"
The answer to that is,
Yes.
