There were some smarter ways they could have adapted the manga. Spent way too much time laying the groundwork for a story that eventually takes a back seat in the 3rd act (although that does track from what I remember reading).
But the animation is the main character in this and they did a great job bringing treasure town to life. Amazeballs music too.

Watched again but with the dvd commentary this time, didn’t learn about the stuff I wanted to learn about but listening to Matt Johnson eat 9 slices of pizza was worth the price of admission. Movie of the decade, where is season 3 and where is my season 1-2, and webshow boxes?

Pretty good but I could tell what video essays curry baker watched to form his directing sensibilities. Really appreciated that the movie didn’t sit the audience down to explain any rules or “why” the wish works. The silent hill drone soundtrack got very old very fast. Two really good, scary scenes and two funny parts make it all worth seeing. Still don’t think his TCM reboot will be good but that probably won’t be baker’s fault.

Gonna be funny when this gets re-released at Cannes and the film bros will claim this when for the last 50 years it was a movie for trashy horror movie heads (ie: possession).
