We’ve spent so much time criticizing Mark but we haven’t even given him kudos for rent controlling his property!

There’s this unique sensation I get whenever I watch Yi Yi that I’m made vulnerable in it’s presence. I sit there on my couch or in a theatre and just let this movie heal me like an act of communion. 

Someone could ask me who I am and I would feel comfortable just playing this film for them. It’s everything I want to say but can never articulate. And that makes sense of why I sometimes find myself guarded about who I watch Yi Yi with. I feel completely laid bare after each viewing, and it’s both scary and wonderful to be in that place.

I think what makes Obsession impressive are things that should be mostly inconspicuous to viewers: its sound mixing, editing, and narrative pacing. All these features were so tight in their construction yet still creative that I had a hard time finding any formal choice to gripe at. It’s also worth mentioning that I thought this movie was 80 minutes walking out. It was only now, after I looked it up, that I found out it’s actually 110. That’s a hell of an effect to have on an audience.
