william talman wrote this? a creative team exploiting “[mid-]fifties reincarnation fad” (leonard maltin) to do a fan-servicey riff on peter ibbetson (ann harding basically reprising her role + the lead character’s name should quiet any doubts). 
i had been under the impression that ibbetson wasn’t “rediscovered” until much later than 1956 but was clearly wrong. a good reminder that cinephiles write film history with themselves at the center, and we sort of assume a movie like peter ibbetson didn’t exist…
