Whoops, it happened again. A write-up several months late. I think my record was Oppenheimer (over a year), but the habit to log every first-time watch retains its grip. It doesn’t fade with the passage of time — nay, it evolves into a slow-burn chokehold. A burden that cannot be shaken.

Alas, memory does fade. On a Silver Globe, I hardly remember thee, save loosely the impenetrable surrealism, meditational stock-footage asides, incestuous colonisation, madness ensuing, psychic moon beasts, and unsettling…

Coming in having never seen an Aronofsky film (so shoot me), discouraged from viewing by both biblically-minded and secular skeptics alike, I was nonetheless determined. In large part because, having recently read the psuedepigraphical 1, 2 and 3 Enoch, I was genuinely curious about the closest thing next to an adaptation of the material.

Read the book earlier today, lucky enough to go in knowing nothing beyond the basic premise. Remarkably tight and effective, and the film follows very closely. I was annoyed by a scene left out near the start that created a continuity error, and the ritual sequence is pretty tame, but otherwise this is very good.

Cassavetes is pretty much perfect casting. There are a few layers to the horror here, but I found the possibility of a complicit husband to be the most disturbing.

Also, did not expect a William Castle cameo and producer credit. We're a long way from The Tingler.

Come for Tim Curry. Stay for Tim Curry.

Leave when the commissioned Sting / Bryan Adams / Rod Stewart theme kicks in.

If this really influenced Alien as much as people claim, Ripley would have spent the entire runtime serving sandwiches and caressing men with minor injuries.

An excellent and much overlooked short film from the mind of Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) and a screenplay from Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Paprika).

So epic that it plays out like a feature condensed to a short, boasting that gorgeous 80s/90s space-anime aesthetic, a haunting and immersive score (Yoko Kanno of Cowboy Bebop) and creative direction. While I'd like to give Kon all the credit here, director Koji Morimoto weaves some wonderful trickery and his visual style is very pleasing. It's…
