In terms of pure exuberance and life, there’s a ton to like here. Where it falls apart a bit is that there’s so much happening at the expense of character and pacing that it felt disjointed. I vibe with the message, the aesthetic is great, but it held me at a distance. I still think Boots has the juice though.
I’ve been looking forward to Obsession since the initial teaser ad Sean Edgar shared on Instagram, and I’ve been going through Barker’s online filmography leading up to its release. Happy to report that it’s been quite a while since a movie lived up to its high concept premise and took things to their logical, surprising yet inevitable conclusion as well as his first properly budgeted feature does.

Neither as scary nor as sexy as I was led to believe. Eggers went so hard at seemingly every turn with The Northman which makes the choices/restraint here feel extremely tame. Plenty to like, Lily-Rose Depp is excellent — the standout amid a strong cast — but this didn’t really add anything new in the mix to Nosferatu or the overall vampire mythos.
Hit so many specific notes for me. Easily one of the best new movies I've watched this year — a year of unknowns, of health scares, of mortality, and of fears about the future... and just how short that future could be. My Old Ass manages to not just touch upon all of that and more, in a thoroughly entertaining and funny packagw, but to see it from two distinct points of view that I could deeply empathize with. Highly recommend for humans of all ages.
