Oh wow I loved it then and I love it now. Incredible color and texture. That scene of Marie Antoinette pining to Avril 14th? Come on. The whole movie is rococo in feelings not just aesthetics. Everything is light, airy, easy, pastel. That cake Rose Byrne bites into.
I can’t believe men talk about this movie as much as they do because frankly this one’s for the girls. It’s the period piece to end all period pieces. Drawing room drama abounds. Marie Antoinette found dead in a ditch. It moves at the pace of an 18th century novel, which is to say… slow. I expected to be swept off my feet but I wasn’t really. There were two absolutely perfect scenes choreographed to a Schubert piece I love.
Talk about every frame a painting though! When I left the theater the world looked very picturesque.
So horny! Yet I was bored less than half the way through. I was hoping for at least a little bit of Ghost Cathy plot but no dice. Should have just been called “Wuthering.” Love the design, Poor Things meets Bridgerton. The campy gags and the melodrama sometimes didn’t play well together (Cathy weeps over her father’s corpse in front of two mounds of empty bottles). And are we supposed to believe she experienced sexual awakening at 30? Were they just frolicking on the moors for twenty years? What was Nelly’s major malfunction anyway?? Who’s gonna braid my hair like that???
