Oppenheimer sowing: Haha fuck yeah!!! Yes!!
Oppenheimer reaping: Well this fucking sucks. What the fuck.
(in all seriousness - a movie about an idealistic, self-important man who was ultimately a pawn in America's hunger for empire. nolan does not seem interested in the men playing chess, if only as a weak gotcha in the third act. I ultimately found it politically toothless!)
if I had a nickel for every time Jacob elordi starred in a surface-level adaptation of a 19th century novel where the groundbreaking, nuanced themes from the female author are watered down via a so-heartthrob-it-misses-the-whole-point version of a monster, I'd have 2 nickels. which isn't a lot, but it's weird it's happened twice in 6 months
oh how I wanted to like this more - I'm typically a sucker for Guillermo's heart-on-his-sleeve sentimentality, but it didn't feel like Frankenstein's monster was a monster, he was more like a superhero. the "monster" was too much of a sad sack heartthrob, and victor was too evil - del Toro is never one of subtlety but good god was everything sooooo overt. it was STUNNING though - I can always count on Guillermo for incredible set design and costuming!
