Johnson packs just about every formal trick he has up his sleeve into Brick in a fashion that perhaps could only be done through a debutantβs audacity. heβs always been a filmmaker whoβs shamelessly a product of his influencesβwhich i continue to find admirable, regardless of resultsβbut itβs clearly on a differentβ¦

TIFF β25 #6
Possibly the prettiest TIFF debut this year, The Condor DaughterΒ is the realist (and humanist) piece I needed at the festival. Reminds me of late-style Kiarostami, which is a big compliment coming from me. Few pacing issues, especially in its first act, but very much worth seeing for the acting and nighttime cinematography alone.
[this was an advance screening meant to start at 7:30, and i had tix to Full Metal JacketΒ at 9:50. i figured thereβs plenty of time to make both. but nobody told me thereβd be a long ass magic show before the screening, and i showed up at the carlton half an hour after doors closed. damn you magic! i want my 5 bucks back.]
