Incredibly fun mood piece. It's genuinely haunting in those cold cavernous castle chambers; if the low budget meant they couldn't fill them with lavish furniture, it totally worked in their favor. Besides the atmosphere I particularly loved Lom's turn as Van Helsing and the framing/camera movements. Glad to have gave this a spin on the 129th anniversary of the novel!

Like most monkey's paw flicks the conceit is always better than the final product, but this is definitely better than what I had expected. There's a lot of ups and downs here, some straight up terrible stylistic and storytelling decisions but also some really great laughs and scares. It's hard to tell how well this executes its thesis, that being that the only conceivable way for a useless shithead like Baron to find love is through deception and magick, just…
