What gives the original Backrooms lore (and internet Liminal space vibes in general) the unsettling atmosphere is a type of subtlety which allows your imagination to fill in the blanks. This film lacks that subtlety which is why it doesn’t really work for me
I also think building a film around this “eerie” or “uncanny” early 90s aesthetic for no reason aside from the source material is lazy story telling. There was just a lack of substance
Some type of psychological horror about the protagonists undoing against a backdrop of “The backrooms” could have offered something more interesting for cinema viewing.
