Sorority Row

Out of all the horror re-imaginings emerging in the wake of the remake renaissance, this one is arguably the campiest, sleekest in its style and kills and laugh-out-loud hilarious with one-liners so acerbic that they would have made instant meme material in this era. Not everything about this has aged well (the campus sexual politics, especially) but I dare you to watch this without bursting out laughing at its bitchy one-liners. Leah Pipes MVP!

The Underground Railroad

Peak-tier TV. Redoes the often-told narrative of slave fugitivity, but saturates it in a story, gloomily informed by Afropessimist thought and practice. How this did not sweep the awards season in every category is beyond me? Exceptional performances across the board, but especially by Thuso Mbedu and Aaron Pierre. Cora and Caesar will remain imprinted in my memory for a very long time.

With this and Nickel Boys, I really need to stop sleeping on Colson Whitehead's formidable oeuvre and pick myself a copy of his books.

โ€œMera toh iss poore shehar mei dum ghutta hai (I feel suffocated everywhere in this city).โ€

Delhi, 2018.

As the entire capital is enveloped under the suffocating smog, I make my way to my usual bus stop. It is a bitingly cold morning, and the stop is unusually desolate. Another woman (resembling a student like me) is the only one standing there, eyeing impatiently for the bus to come by. Seeing me as the only person present there, she movesโ€ฆ

Queer

Film adaptations of classic texts are usually translations of the narrative of the book into the movie. But Luca Guadagnino and screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes go beyond exploring the narrative of queer longing and control of its source text to honour the fraught and complex legacy of William S. Burroughs himself--making this adaptation a meta exercise of reflection into the life of its creator itself.

We are all Lees thirsting for our Allertons-only to realize that the pursuit of an ideal love has always been a futile exercise, like a snake swallowing itself.
