this had been on my watchlist for ages

a sleepy but sweet end-of-the-world narrative. love the general late '90s aesthetic and seeing Toronto circa 1997. Miracle Mile remains the standard-bearer for the one-night apocalypse setting, but i found enough to like about this one.

oh no, my weaknesses: oral trauma and tall, leggy women

Bob carried this movie. Protect Bob at all costs.

this movie hits extra-close to home, as it was filmed in my hometown of Nanaimo, BC. i, too, moved to this region with my family around the turn of the century. (the opening shot of the film tracks the family station wagon as it drives past the 1960s apartment building where some duster kid sold me computer RAM in 2013.)

i knew it was filmed on Vancouver Island, but my jaw dropped at the realization that locales like Sugarloaf Mountain

Harvey Keitel joins Robert de Niro in the "1970s tough-guy actor-to-star of a Palme d'Or-winning period piece in which the local indigenous peoples are wallpaper to the eurocentric goings-on" pipeline and this one is just as lacking in an emotional centre to earn my investment as The Mission, but doesn't have a funny stone of shame sequence like The Mission — just Harvey's little keitel and Sam Neill's bare cheeks

TIL Harvey Keitel was in consecutive Palme winners between this and Pulp Fiction, though. Neat! Good job, Harvey.

Sam Neill didn't want to show his ass ahhhhahaha
