i was at least excited to share that i’d learned from the movie that Viriginia Woolf had written a self-insert OC named “Volumnia Fox” in Orlando but ultimately cut it from book. turns out Preciado didn’t fact check, Volumnia Fox was a thinly veiled parody character written by a different author who was skewering Woolf’s literary clique.
glad to have a specific, non-trans related example in this movie to point to when thinking about how lazily it was made.
the king woman track rips — in a way i feel like it channels the feeling i hoped the back half of the movie had carried. i respect the intent and ambition of this movie, but ultimately i couldn’t connect with it’s pacing and lack of a climax — felt like a montage of music videos for songs about dysphoria.
but perhaps it’s also because my pre-transition nausea felt like it was more about confusion than self-denial — reading the other reviews from trans people it seems that this movie worked for them in a way that isn’t available to me.
