100% on my wavelength.
Babylon + Young Frankenstein = I’m in love.

So wildly off the wall that I have to just give up on any kind of “real” critique. Sometimes those crazy choices really took me out of the film and had me thinking about the how and why a lot. I think for this to really hit a home run for me, I would have had to feel more transported despite those wild choices but I still just have to sit back and grin and admire the sheer audacity of it all.

I mean fine but didn’t really feel like it had much of a point for existing… Theron has already proved that she can be a total badass and Edgerton has certainly proved that he loves to play a psycho (and that he looks good naked). It was pleasantly lean and short enough but felt like the cat-and-mouse portion could have been more drawn out. Nice to see that the elements of Ozploitation are still alive and well though.

Smooth Talk

David Lynch saw this movie.

It is not Lynchian really but the influence on Twin Peaks is hard to deny and Laura Dern’s character leads chronologically and thematically straight into Blue Velvet, not to mention the fact that the last third of the film is a less explicit yet arguably more unnerving version of the Bobby Peru scene from Wild at Heart.

All that is not to diminish the power and complexity of SMOOTH TALK. It’s a surprisingly subjective film…
