individuals caught, swallowed up, by a great wave... a pervasive sense of melancholy, the notion that something has been lost, though I am skeptical of simplifying/ glorifying the past...: zhangke always proving that being a political filmmaker is not anathema to being a humanistic one. was too sleepyheaded to take the film in in its entirety but it gave me away to my dreams beautifully 💤 obsessed w the screens in screens... maybe need to compile a list

I don’t want to be a Buddhist or a robot... I want to feel… 

I think this movie takes a profoundly empathetic approach to the crisis of alienation and the crisis of masculinity; while they are entwined, the latter is a distinctly self-imposed condition. as a ‘modern’ woman, it can seem almost logical to be alienated from your desire for love/companionship that finally confronting it feels enormous and disorienting.
