Beautiful to look at, with strong performances and some fresh approaches to depicting colonialism’s horrors, but the script could have used a lot more time in the oven - the characters are thinly drawn, and the story, though hard-hitting, unfolds in thuddingly simplistic ways (and almost entirely in the story's past-tense!). Great to see a NZ horror film that takes itself seriously for once, though.

Super refreshing to see a New Zealand film whose vibes are not The New Zealand Comedy or The New Zealand Drama, but something all of its own. Absolutely relies on certain life experiences to really appreciate its peculiar rhythms, but if you are tall enough to ride the ride, it’s a fun one. Chalk up another win for the 48HOURS to indie feature pipeline.
